Utterly charming
I came back to this film in 2020 for the first time since its release in 1995 and it is a wonderful watch. Funny, romantic, with fantastic performances, a real feel-good movie which fosters dreams in these times of gloomy uncertainty. And Johnny Depp? Well, worth watching for him alone, he plays the part beautifully.

The personality divided
A young American (played by Johnny Depp) believes not only that he is Spanish, but that he is the heroic lover, Don Juan de Marco, of legend and romance. His theatrical attempt at a very public suicide when he is rejected by the object of his desire brings him into contact with the US Department of Health and Psychiatric Medicine, who hold him in protective custody while he undergoes tests and interviews with senior staff, notably a psychiatrist, played by the late Marlon Brando. The clash of two cultures becomes a clash of two realities and the glory and honour of the one far outshines the jaded, faded lacklustre of the other. Yet the danger is all too real, for the powers representing 'established medicine' are determined to classify the young man as 'delusional', as a 'paranoid schizophrenic' and to section him and thus institutionalise him and forever deny him his freedom. The drama is underscored by Bryan Adams, whose 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman' and other songs adds a hauntingly beautiful dimension of sound to what is already a visually and dramatically captivating spectacle.

Doesn’t rate as the old classic I’d expected.
I had expected this to be excellent because the casting was chosen from the upper echelons of actors and the sound track was (and still is) fantastic, but was disappointed as I found it very dated. Even the attempts at irony fell short in the amusement stakes.

Such a delight
This is a wonderfully romantic story full of tender humour.Favourite quote: "There are four things a man must know: what is sacred; of what is the spirit made; what is worth living for; and what is worth dying for"

funny, sweet and subtly sexy
a charming little movie, Depp excels as the titular hero, a young man convinced that he is the legendary lover, Don Juan, who teaches his psychiatrist, (ably played by screen great Brando) to open himself up to more than reality. Faye Dunaway is the psychiatrists wife and turns in a subtle performance, allowing the two male leads to 'bond'. It isn't the usual big, brash and bold Hollywood screen fare - thankfully! However it has wit and charm by the bucketload, a superb cast and a sparkling script. If I have one criticism though, it's that the female 'conquests' of Don Juan are frankly, a bit wet. None of the actresses stand out, even Talisa Soto looked as if she was sleepwalking. Nonetheless, a feelgood movie if ever there was one.

Loved seeing this again. Charming fantasy with one foot in reality. Brando, Dunaway and Depp do not disappoint. Spanish guitar music is an added pleasure.
