It is not closed cell foam. It is rubber. I don't know what temperature it would hold up to.

Is this similar to what’s used to retain lawn mower seat vinyl covers?

I would say that it is probably similar. Looking at a cross section, it is U shaped with inside gripping edges. I used it as an edge for carpet I installed in a classic car. It fit snuggly and gave the carpet a nice finished edge.

Don’t be fooled. Most people are using wood or Sheetrock screws with a large diameter fender washer to keep trim in place.
