Review: Who is Hunting Who in Blake Pierce's Riley Paige Mystery Book 5...Once Hunted - Well, here we go again, the monsters have come out to kill and this time it is two monsters that were in Sing Sing Prison in Ossing, NY. We find that Shane Hatcher told Riley Paige he would see her again, but not in the prison. She didn't even think about it until she was called in to Quantico by Special Agent Brent Meredith. who Riley loved and she felt like he tried to have her back. She and Bill Jeffreys was called into the office to be told that Shane Hatcher had broke out of prison and Walder there boss wanted her to find him in 48 hours. Riley Page is a FBI Agent who really understands the criminal mind. But her boss’s boss, Walder, is a unintelligent jerk who doesn’t appreciate Riley, and constantly micromanages her, which causes Riley to have to ignore his orders. Riley has an unusual relationship with the prisoner, nicknamed “Shane the Chain” because he liked to “beat rival gang members to death with chains”. He has been in prison for thirty years and recently escaped. Another prisoner was released early for good behavior, which was an act. He wants revenge on Riley and figures her 15-year-old daughter’s death will bring him joy. This other prisoner Orin Rhodes was the boyfriend to the first person she ever had to kill, Heidi and it would seem he blamed her. So this the story of them trying to get Riley to arrest Shane and bring him back to other young agents to go after Orin Rhodes, once he starts killing. This book was good. The plot was believable, and the book was action packed. I like the exchange between Riley and Shane. This was really good book and I would highly recommend it.

Once Hunted
Book 5 was a really great book in the Riley Paige series. The twists and turns had me scared for Riley and for her daughter, April. Will book 6 calm down a little? I'm getting ready to find out.

“Loyalty Takes Some Dark Forms”
An FBI procedural storyline that has some aspects a reader may find annoying, but NOT without merit. For instance Riley Page is a top notch FBI Agent who really understands the criminal mind. But her boss’s boss is a unintelligent jerk who doesn’t appreciate Riley, and constantly micromanages her, which causes Riley to have to ignore his orders. Riley has an unusual relationship with a prisoner, nicknamed “Shane the Chain” because he liked to “beat rival gang members to death with chains”. He has been in prison for thirty years and recently escaped. Another prisoner was released early for good behavior, which was an act. He wants revenge on Riley and figures her 15-year-old daughter’s death will bring him joy. Riley and her partner, Bill, have their work cut out for them. Those two prisoners seem to be connected in some way. And what do her ex-husband, a neighbor, and Bill have in common. This is a complex story with twists and some dark moments. It is an entertaining read and the ending makes me want to read the next book in the series.

Unrealistic Personal Relationships
I continue reading the series because I'm OCD. I don't dislike the books, but, there's something unrealistic about the characters. yes, it's unrealistic for agents in any book to have so many things happen. I get that. but Riley and her relationships don't gel. her work chain of command isn't realistic. she's off the case, on, off - no insubordination issues? so many of these things have me facepalming. here's a BIG one - WARNING - - SPOILER ALERT - - - - at the end of this title, April's behavior (and shouldn't she have been cautious after her own traumas?) leads directly to the death of an agent - and no one mentions that??? Riley - an agent herself - - doesn't say a word! any parent would have said/done SOMETHING! so, the unrealistic personal relationships bug me. I won't even start on Jilly. I'm into the next book. Aaaaagh. I keep going because I'm invested. like a train wreck. 3.5 reviews of I could.

An excellent story, and is highly recommended to the mystery reader.
Another excellent Riley Page mystery. The author has created an outstanding character in Riley Page, one who can understand and get into the criminal mind. The reader can feel the psychological stress that this causes her, as well as her family. The reader will be familiar with many of the characters and will be drawn into their lives as well, sharing their pain and accomplishments. An excellent story, and is highly recommended to the mystery reader.
