Rowling's wonderfully written, expounded, and richly imaginative introduction to the world of Harry Potter was at once both greatly entertaining and highly amusing. The translator has done an excellent job of setting Rowling's standard English text to the everyday dialect that is spoken around Glasgow, Ayrshire, and Arran, areas with which I was once so familiar. Since I have been away for 17 years now, I was a little uncertain about how easily I would be able to follow the Scots narrative, to the point where I purchased a Scots-Standard English dictionary. But I need not have bothered! The story being related in this fashion brought me back to my days when I was a child in school. Once I re-acquired the rhythm of the Scots dialect ( which came flooding back in a matter of minutes), I barreled through the entire book over the course of three days. I won't spoil the fun by repeating them here, but many broad Scots phrases and characterizations of familiar characters had me rolling around the floor laughing. My Dallas-born and raised wife however commented that the text is unintelligible gibberish and cannot believe that I am able to understand it! It may be too much to ask, but I very much hope the rest of the Harry Potter series becomes available translated thusly. I for one would most definitely purchase the lot. Thank you to the translator for a job very well done! Review: Wonderful read even if you don’t know Scots - It is fun to collect different editions of Harry Potter from around the world to notice the differences. The great thing about Scot’s is that it is related to English enough that even if you don’t know the language, you can understand it. It has a wonderful linguistic flair that reads well out loud or in your head and when you encounter localized terms, it’s a great learning experience to look them up to find their meaning. Very flavorful, fun, and a great addition to any collection.

Huge fan
I’m a huge fan and know their book by heart. I found it so much fun to read it in its Scots accent and comparing the words to my memory ones. I laughed so much (mainly at my own complete failure at sounding Scottish and not the words themselves) and my family has had a great time with it too. It’s so much fun to experience someone I love through the culture of another place. And I say that because many descriptions are “different” than plain English and you experience the story differently.

If you're on the fence, just get this book. You won't regret it!
We are loving this Harry Potter book. I lived in Scotland for a wee bit 25 years ago and I'm pleasantly surprised how quickly I caught onto the accent again. It's a riot to read this out loud, which seems to be the only way we can read it around here. My kids, who have never been to Scotland, love it just as much as I do. The translator did a fantastic job. I've included a photo of one hilarious paragraph from the first page of "Chaipter Ane: The Laddie Wha Lived" which describes the Dursleys. The whole book is like that. It's awesome. :)

I can't wait for Christmas.
I was in Edinburgh this may and I wanted this for my daughter who is a great Potter fan as I bought her the whole set while I was there but where out of this one which is in Scottish. I can't wait to see her face on Christmas day! Best gift ever.

Makes a great gift
I bought this as a gag gift for my cousin and it was perfect! She’s a Harry Potter fanatic and she read the book aloud to her husband. Needless to say they were laughing uncontrollably. If you love Harry Potter this is just another way to enjoy a good laugh while reading one of your favorite stories. 100% worth the buy

its fun to read and makes a good conversation piece
this review is for the scots edition. this edition is interesting because of the translation. they are trying to write things down in a way that is true to how things are spoken in scotland. from what i can tell there are very few publishers (maybe only this one) producing mass-market scots content. its fun to try to figure out what they are saying and it doesn't feel like a stilted translation.

So fun to read, I can hear the accent as I read it but can't read properly out loud - lol.

Não sabia que “Escocês” é uma língua tão diferente do Inglês. Poderiam então colocar o nome como está na capa “…stane” e não stone.

Je n’avais pas vu que c’était une traduction écossaise … C’est une erreur de ma part La transaction, elle, s’est bien passée.
