A agree with some of the people who loved /liked the movie
A agree with some of the people who loved /liked the movie. It starts with quite a spectacle as the cells start ringing at the airport (typically Stephen King). He gives a HUGE wink towards the zombie movies madness that seems to be running since quite some time now. I really loved the unique final scene which is one only Stephen King could come up it. Perhaps you should temporarily forget about the zombie movies/series like Walking Dead, etc., which cannot be compared to the Cell movie. Like so many things in life, try to reset your mind to neutral before watching this movie. You will enjoy it all the more. And if you want a predictable and/or happy ending, watch a Disney or a feel good movie.

A very bad adaptation of a very good novel.
Yes, I get that they are trying to condense 20+ hours of reading (about 500 pages) into 2 hours of film, so much will be different. However, I was not expecting this to be so completely different from the book. So many changes were made inexplicably. SPOILERS for the book and film ahead, so you've been warned:-There's basically no character development at all. We only get key snippets of the characters speculating on what caused the Pulse and how it affects people. One scene where Clay and Alice discuss Clay's failed relationship. Beyond that there is no character development at all. In the book there are constantly quirky and interesting conversations and dialogue occuring. That's all gone in the film.-Quite a few characters were cut from the book, some of whom were quite important to the plot.-The Raggedy Man / President of Harvard was repackaged as 'the president of the internet' and he had literally no dialogue or real interaction at all with the characters. In the book he is an ominous and very creepy figure, who communicates with the survivors multiple times. Both in-person and in dreams (which do not remotely resemble the dreams the characters briefly experienced once in the film).-The entire section towards the end was absolutely meaningless and nonsensical to an audience which isn't familiar with the book. The phoners inexplicably stop attacking survivors. In the book this is explained by a 'worm' (virus) in the signal causing it to degrade. Of course, for this to be explained, you'd have to first explain that the phoners share a telepathic hive-mind, which was completely absent from the film.-The ending was totally dumb. Clay finds his kid, who turns him into a phoner.-Phoners are not able to 'infect' survivors in the book, yet they can just yell at survivors in the film and they turn. This is dumb. In the book, the phoners telepathically instruct survivors to line up to be converted by exposure to cell phones because it's the only way they can recruit. Yes, in the book the phoners actually telepathically communicate (and even start speaking at one point) with survivors. They also levitate.-The entire finale at Kashwakamak Hall was entirely cut and replaced with a bizarre new scene where Clay drives to a cell tower, kills the Raggedy Man (very anti-climactically) with several shotgun blasts. Raggedy Man then magically comes back to life. In the book, he stays dead when killed, and doesn't die in this fashion.-So many weird and utterly unnecessary changes were made. The schoolbus became an ice cream van. Alice died in a bar rather than being killed on the road by Gunner and Harold (characters who don't even appear in this adaptation). Clay tells the group to write their markings on the left side of the road, rather than the right (why did they change this for the film???).-The soundtrack was just wrong. There are a lot of references to specific music and songs in the book, yet none of them appear in the film. Instead we get the 'trollolololol' song only. It's not exactly difficult to get the copyright for Lawrence Welk's 'Baby Elephant Walk', since you see it used all over the place in pop culture, but they couldn't even manage that.-Ray blows himself up rather than shooting himself (as he does in the book). I guess Tod Williams thinks the audience need to be constantly reminded that Ray is the demolitions expert. This doesn't make much sense since his explosive belt could have easily killed Clay, when Ray's intention was to HELP the group survive.-Ray specifically killed himself in the book so that the Phoners couldn't read his mind and determine his plan. The phoners in the film are not telepathic, so Ray's suicide doesn't actually make any sense.-Ray's bomb is discovered immediately after his death. The revelation of the bomb in the book came later and was a plot-twist. I guess plot-twists are just too hard to understand for Tod Williams and his target audience. But since the entire finale was cut from the film, the bomb was not very relevant. All in all, this film was really quite poor and was full of unexplained holes. To a viewer unfamiliar with the book it would just seem confusing and inexplicable. These holes could only be explained if you've read the book, but the film doesn't even attempt to touch upon any of that. There's no telepathy, the dreams don't make any sense (completely different from the book), the hive-mind is never really explained, the antagonist is just a total missed opportunity who has no character (again totally unlike the book) and is killed very easily and anti-climactically. And the ending...the ending completely lacked any poignance. The ending of the book was both super-depressing and ambiguously allowed some hope for Clay and his son at the end. In the film, Clay becomes a phoner. The end.Ultimately, this film is a confusing and inexplicably shallow experience for anyone unfamiliar with the book. For those familiar with the source material, it is just infuriatingly watered-down and full of inexplicable changes. All of the most tense scenes were completely cut or altered in ways which didn't even make sense. If you are not familiar with the book, go read it. It's a great story. Then consider watching the film, so you can see the differences. The only good thing I can say about the film is that because it changes so many major parts of the plot, it actually doesn't spoil that much of the book. It especially doesn't spoil how the book ends and builds up to the end, since all of those scenes never happened in the film.

Such a GREAT film, until they couldn't decide how to END it!
I really liked this film and it must have cost a ton of money to make. Production values are high and it's a proper big budget film. Strong 'Hollywood Royalty' cast - John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, interesting (and stupidly topical) subject matter about mobile phones turning people into homicidal maniacs - apart from our heroes and the 'sorry, you're not going to make it' people they meet on the way. The suspense throughout the film is maximum and it keeps up the momentum right until the end, when someone (Director/Film Studio?) panics and provides us with TWO endings and an unnecessary Dad & Son Walk To Heaven dream sequence.SPOILER ALERT - What was wrong with Cusack blowing-up the maniacs in the final scene, saving himself and his son from damnation? But wait... somehow they escaped the blast and are now walking to meet friends for a barbecue?! Actually no. There never was an explosion and now Dad and Son get to run around the 5G mast forever??!! It's such a daft ending that it has to be shown TWICE!!! - Cusack jogging in slow-mo, just so as we thickies can understand it.Let's choose an ending and then this can be cult classic film. Am I wrong?

Your phones ringing. Omg, just don't answer it 😱
I've seen a lot of SLJ and JC films and most of them I've enjoyed watching. To list a lot of them just now I can't be arsed, but like I've just said a lot of them I've found good viewing. I was scrolling through the film list and came across cell and after noticing the two actors on the front cover and then watching the trailer I thought, give it a go Rob, rent it in case it's pants rather then buying. U can buy later if it's any good. If you've seen the film then you'll like myself know the story, if you havnt don't worrry, I ain't gonna give any spoilers. Your prob aware though that it's another Z film. The walking dead ripping out the livings insides and feasting. There's been a load of Z films, some good some awful. One of the best that instantly comes to mind if SOTD I'm sure I don't have to properly spell it out do I. Pegg and frost made a wonderful comedy gore fest and the film in my veiw is a true classic. Not a classic such as out of Africa or Gandhi, remains of the day Kramer v Kramer or the odd couple. It's a classic in the Z film genre u understand. Ok back to what I thought of the film. It's a good watch. There's an intense opening 15 mins which has a terrifying realisisam to the opening. We've all heard of scare munger stories about mobiles havnt we and this film sure sends a shiver down your spine. But it's a film and not supposed to be real life so just sit back and enjoy it like I did. But just one thing, if your mobile rings at some point during the film simply get a hammer and smash the thing to bits lol.

I love horror films, and I was impressed by this, it made me freeze in awe a few times
I love horror films and its always a hit or miss with films rated 3 stars, and this was a hit. I really enjoyed it and it got me frozen in awe a few times, even though most of the things going on were classic horror cues. I think this is a great film for people who don't often watch horror, and fancy a scare for a change and this will impress them. For lover of horror, will deffos be a hit or miss. The acting was spot on though, I've never see S.L.J be serious before!
