Excellent book
Hats off to Tilt and others of this breed. Takes a special breed to go creeping around the NVA’s territory with just 6 or 7 men. Hats off to the me. In SOG.

Liked the photographs
Have read too many books on SOG. The research of secondary (names of support air pilots) made the reading tenuous. O skipped the information on equipment carried and such. That important mission and a single chapter on the improper CNN report would have been sufficient. I never served in SOG, but my 18 months experience in Special Forces gives me some credibility. Those men who did served in SOG where special, very special. The ones who I drank with often made cryptic references to their missions, which are clear to me now. Most of the references were about having to leave dead SF or indigenous members of their teams behind. Many put in 1040's to go back because of their guilt. These SOG men where true warriors, those who could not handle it quit and only had to answer to themselves. That was how Special Forces worked. 87 smart men started my training, (medical, 52 weeks) after jump school, 15 finish without being recycled. I would be interested in book that refers the betrayal of indigenous soldiers, it happened.

I truly enjoyed this book
I truly enjoyed this book. It provides a very good picture of the SOG soldiers and indigenous troops who traveled into Laos and fought the NVA. I loved the detail, the description of the weapons and tactics used, and the story of the air cover they got from Marines, Army, and Air Force pilots and crew. I believe the book was written by someone who understands the situation and who like I and others appreciative the truthfulness. As a retired USMC officer I applaud where CNN is called out for it's too often false news stories. They were and continue to be a discredit to the citizens and those who serve the USA. I'm doubting many in CNN have ever witness the horrors of war and when brave men sacrifice like those involved with Operation Tailwind the media fools like those in CNN insult and discredit them. I am also so happy to learn that in spite of their wounds not one of the SOG soldiers died on the fields of battle in Laos during Tailwind. I am also so happy to read about the story behind Green Beret Media Mike Rose receiving the Medal of Honor. Good job John Meyer! The book should be required reading for the likes of Southern California teacher and councilman Gregory Salcido who sparked national outcry after saying that American troops are "the lowest of our low. None are lower then Salcido! He most certainly is a low life and not someone who should be trusted to teach our children and insult our men and women in uniform.

Outstanding set of books
When I read a book I often scan pages when they bog down, but that wasn't the case with this one. I liked it so much that I purchase 'on the ground' and 'Across the Fence'. All three were excellent.Great descriptions of the various missions and the individuals involved. I read them quickly and may go back for a reread, no scanning required.I wish there were more .

not your typical John Stryker Meyer read
I have read JSM’s other books and they are unbelievable. This one was just too repetitive. It doesn’t seem to go into the same level of depth that really pulls you into the missions like his other books do. Sadly I would not recommend.Do not let my lack of enthusiasm for this book detract from the immeasurable respect I have for him and the other Green Berets that served in Vietnam.

Reads true and "first hand"
I very much enjoyed learning of the "unsung bravery" of four days of almost constant combat by these SOG warriors working far behind enemy lines. The book reads true and "first hand". It was refreshing to read about the sacrifices made by those in support of this mission, too, and especially to learn that those stout-hearted pilots and crew members were drawn from all branches of our military. I thought it helpful also because it set the record straight about the baseless and underhanded news program perpetrated by CNN, which cast doubt, unjust doubt, on remarkable reputations. It marred sterling war records. Another example of rewriting that War's history. The damage done by such cavalier reporting, which was happily not as prevalent in those days as it is today among the majority of news organizations. Fake new has become the norm today, but in the 90s the public still expected to read or watch evenhanded reporting and thoroughly documented news. It's next to impossible to remove such a stigma, but this book helps. I look forward to the next "SOG Chronicles" in this series.

The Quiet Professionals
An excellent read. The Green Berets and the pilots who supported them across the fence must have had a special tailor to adjust there trousers because they were all carrying around big giant brass ones.A good account of the heroic who carried out some nasty missions beyond the call in my opinion.I first read of these with Lynne M. Black's book "WTF" which I would recomend to anyone interested in the subject of SOG or Vietnam. There i came across Mr. Meyer's name and have read his books along with " The Dying Place" and a very short piece on Robert Howard who had more medals than Audie Murphy. But who knew? It was all secret.I have a brother who did a tour with MACV but he will never talk about it like he will never talk about Hue during the Tet offensive. ( He was there though not a marine or in the 101st). So i read things like this to get an idea of his two tours. Thanks to the author for making some info avaiable.

A factual book of the Secret War in Vietnam.
This is a book I have been waiting for, for the past 50 odd years. Having met some of these men and having my interests pricked by a few things I was over the moon when this book came onto the market. A great read and hair raising descriptions of the operations these men undertook. In my own mind every one of these men go beyond the call of duty and regularly obtain the intelligence that the top shed requested, only to be disbelieved at times by lesser personnel.A book that is hard to put down, and should only be started early in the morning to avoid sleep deprivation.

Recollection of memories
A fine story in honour of brave men, but some sentences were repetative and causing the reader to wonder if they had lost their place in the story.

we must never forget the bravery of all involved in this war
again a must book for all interested in vietnam war this book depi d's the secret covert operations of green berets and their fellow Vietnamese troops who all operated behind enemy lines it's a must it shows the bravery of these soldiers who were used to infiltrate the enemy in their backyard with the knowledge that each mission was a suicide trip these men must have been terrified yet without exception did what they had to do heroes each and everyone of these men women American Vietnamese their actions probably saved many lives and yet the American high up military and senators were quite prepared if things went wrong to deny these operations in Laos and Cambodia the end result was these people were left to there fate after America left what a way to treat there own military and the civilian Vietnamese people and like their future involvement have left a bigger mess in Iraq Afghanistan libya we as people will never learn and it's always the soldier in the front line who bears the brunt without complaint a great read and insight to the war in vietnam
