I bought this for my grandsons, ages 4 and 6, and they were easy enough for them to use, have a great range, stay charged long enough, and they've been having a blast. One of the best things I've ever bought for them!

These have stopped working only after a few months of use. I would not recommend.

EDIT- Customer service reached out and sent us a new set of walkie talkies. My kids opened them this morning and they all turned on! Win number one. Hopefully our original set was just a dud. I'll update again after some time, hopefully with good news of fully working walkie talkies.I like that these are rechargeable, but other than that, they've been a huge disappointment. The buttons are very hard to push. They scan for a channel and it's like playing russian roulette to get them to stop on the same channel as each other. None of my kids are able to turn them off or on themselves, because the button usually doesn't work unless you push it with the tip of your finger nail, incredibly hard. They don't hold a charge for very long and don't reach nearly as far as advertised. Sometimes they turn on and sometimes they don't. I ordered them as a way to be able to communicate with my kids, a few blocks away, at the park. They do not serve this purpose.

These Walkie Talkies definitely fit the bill as being a good choice for children. They have a design simple enough for easy use, but have plenty of features to introduce more advanced concepts and maybe even inspire an interest in radio technology. These are not extremely rugged but are strong enough for even fairly rambunctious use!
