First Year Cello Method: Specially Devised for School Violoncello Classes and Individual Tuition

Such a useful book for learners
Absolutely first rate book for learning how to play the cello - no bull, no blurb, no dumbing down, no cartoons but Lesson 1: Plucking Open Strings -short display showing the strings written as music notes with straight forward instruction to pluck the appropriate string when you see the given note - a variety of simple tunes to practice with & there you go. Because what you need to do is understand, practice, learn & then it becomes a habit. I’m using this as a 52yr old learner in conjunction with several other books (such as Easy Classical Cello Solos which has good basic info at the start & some great pieces to work on) and brill YouTube tutorials because you also need to become familiar with the bow, stringing, care of the cello etc etc. There’s a lot to learn when you first pick up a cello & that can be so daunting as to completely put you right off but this book is brilliant for connecting you to written music and learning fast & easily in a methodical way

A resource of tunes for duet, not a tutor
This book will provide you with straightforward tunes to develop playing techniques, and although I have yet to work with it, it looks enjoyable for a beginner like me. However, be aware that this is a resource book of music scores, designed to be played in two (duet) parts ie. pupil and teacher. It does not contain any instruction on how to play the cello.

Brilliant book for beginners of all ages!
I'm a 46yr old and haven't picked up a cello for over 30yrs. Even then I didn't get to do much learning before a change of school meant I had to stop. One thing I remember from back then was this book. I was so happy to see it amongst the learner books available so I bought it hoping that it would be just as good for me now as it was the first time I got the chance to play one of these beautiful instruments. I've forgotten everything I ever learnt but this book is making it easy to pick up again. The plucking section at the beginning gets you used to using open strings and gets you started with finger positioning as you progress. I'm back to using a bow and having a go at playing a cello again decades after I last put a cello away. I've already bought the second book so I've got it there when I'm reaady to progress. I'm looking forward to being able to play alongside my daughter with her saxophone sometime soon. X
