It’s expensive but without doubt the best machine on the market of April 2025 . I’ve tested seven high end optical drives archiving my old 3000+ cd collection and this series of internal / external by Pioneer is a beast . I’ve virtually had no fails , no matter now old , scratched, or damaged the CDs … This machine is munching all the discs which got ejected by the other optical drive I’m beyond impressed.

This is the second Pioneer drive of the current generation that I have tried. Both didn't work for the purpose of ripping CDs to my PC. While my Asus and LG drives could do Accurate rip on every CD with no frame errors these produce thousands on every track and every CD!! This issue has been known for over 2 years and Pioneer have not sorted it. Speaking to Pioneer technical UK they say that they have not sold DVD/CD drives in the UK for over 20 years!!

Optical drives aren't very common on PC's these days, and with more and more media being available digitally you could be mistaken for believing that they are now redundant. However they are still useful for storing and playing media, and many streaming services still don't match the quality available on CD or UHD BD. This Pioneer drive is aimed at videophiles and is priced accordingly. In the box you have the drive and a user manual. The drive is nicely constructed with brass plates screws and an anti-vibration coating. The bezel is finished in gloss piano black and does have a habit of attracting dust. While the bezel does look nice it does feel quite light. I would have been nice, especially at this price point, had it been alloy or at least made of a higher quality plastic. However the reasoning may relate to noise and vibration reduction and it doesn't adversely effect the performance of the drive. Installation is straightforward for anyone who is computer savvy. You will need your own screws and SATA cable. I've seen criticism of their absence from the pack, but this makes sense as your case my have a different mounting solutions. Along with the drive there is also a product key for a limited suite of software. It is a cut down version but it's useful for anyone who doesn't have their own software for playback and writing. Windows recognises the drive without a problem. In terms of noise it is easily the quietest optical drive I've used. Even while writing it ommits a low level woosh. When reading it is barely noticeable. I tried writing to a BD-R and was surprised how quick it completed even with an error check. The drive is compatible with BD XL and M discs. Unfortunately I don't currently have any of those to test. I really like this drive. It's well made, quiet and reads and writes accurately. As someone who still uses optical media I am really happy with it's performance. However I have to consider the price when awarding a star rating. At £287 at the time of writing it is considerably more expensive than most optical drives. Even Pioneer's next model down is notable less. However I can still recommend this drive to anyone looking for the best.

Pioneer Internal Blu-ray Drive BDR-S13E-X This drive comes in the manufacturers branded box and is well protected inside for it's transit journey. Included in the box is the instruction manual printed in several languages which also has a quick start guide for those of us who skip the bumf we don't have time to read. Pioneer is a well established and a long standing brand which produces the fastest models of premium products. This writer and burner is the latest model which reads quicker and detects scratches and unreadable discs and with the package you get the key code for CYBERLINK software too.
