Q: Can I fill with sand instead of water?

Yes sand works, water and sand both (drain water in winter to prevent freezing, beet juice from tractor dealer works well also and should nor freeze.

Q: Have you had any problems with your lawn roller since you purchased it and would you buy it again?

Usage I have had the lawn roller for many years now (over 8 years-2007). I have used the roller after rain storms to help remove ruts (tracks) on my lawn. Problems The "Fill and drain plug" broke. Early this year 2015, the locking latch broke off due to rust or aging. It was not damaged during use or storage (stored in barn). Need to try to purchase a replacement plug (Anyone have ideas?) Durability The roller body is durable, the framing is strong and has not rusted in South Florida weather. Suggestion I recommend you remove the drain plug when not in use. Plug is rubber and should be treated with a protectant when not in use.

Q: if it is stored in direct sunlight will the plastic roller deteriorate?

At this point I don't know. If the manufacturer states it is made of a UV plastic it should be alright. But, even if you store the roller outside, it would always be a good practice to keep the thing shaded from the plastic deteriorating UV Ray's of the sun. If you pick up a ultraviolet filtering grill cover, the size of the purchased roller, that should take care of it.

Q: What size plug would I need to replace the fill and drain plug?

It comes with a plug already, but I believe it is a 3/4" boat drain plug that is used
