useless without clear assembly instructions.
The assembly instructions with this kit are plain inadequate for the complexity of some of the models I.e. all the exciting builds. All you get is "assemble the model as shown in the pictures", these being 2 or 3 photos of the models in various stages of assembly. No line drawings, no detail, you basically have to go figure and even for a highly experienced engineer with a good understanding of gears, wheels, drivetrains etc I'm struggling. No prizes then for guessing how long this kit held the attention of my bright, interested in science and machines, 8 year old. Me, I'm deeply disappointed that a kit costing this much is so poorly explained, and pretty disgusted that the Thames and kosmos website cheerfully sports additional instructions for one model from a customer! Did they not get the hint? T&K, if you're reading this, please consider that kids like to build things, not just see them working. It defeats the object if an adult has to build the kits. 90% of the learning is in realising that by connecting that gear to this point, drive is delivered and so on. While the materials themselves are fine (same quality as say Meccano or Lego) I doubt I'll buy this brand again.

I ordered this for use in homeschooling two girls, ages 11 and 9. We just started using it, and so far, it looks like it will be a valuable component of my physics curriculum. I do the think the experiments tend to build upon each other in some place and thus require somewhat of a consecutive order. However, I'm sure a person can pick through here and there if one had the time. There are other, more thorough reviews on the structure of it. I mainly wanted to say that, in the kit we received, the motor box (an essential part of the kit) was not working correctly, as the motor was spinning but not fully engaging with the axle inserted into the side of the box. I simply called the phone number, which I found on their site, within one minute was connected with a LIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING PERSON, briefly explained the problem, gave my address, and should receive a new part within a week. Where do you get customer service like THAT anymore? So I thought I would take some of the time that COULD have been spent getting through an automated phone system, hassling with an outsourced customer service rep who, after arguing with me for 10 minutes, would tell me to return the kit at my inconvenience... and spend that time letting potential customers know that this is a quality product and a good company to deal with. Edit: Well, after looking again at the other reviews, maybe I should expound a little. My girls LOVE building the structures, and so far have had no problem doing that, by themselves, from the detailed pictures provided. I have been reading the lessons in the manual to them, and honestly, this workshop, including the accompanying narrative, could be an entire curriculum in and of itself. I had compared it to the physics textbook we have been working in, and this workshop provides excellent coverage of the physics subject. It is NOT just a bunch of experiments. The manual thoroughly explains all of the concepts involved, in very understandable language and an engaging manner. As a longtime homeschooler, I would consider this to very usable as a curriculum, especially for hands-on learners, and a lot of fun, as well.
