Saul Leiter: The Centennial Retrospective

A gorgeous book full of beautiful photographs and some very interesting history about the photographer. Something for a cozy afternoon with the Violet while the weather is bad outside. I bought this because of his snowy photography in New York. So it’s ideal for snuggling down with in winter.

I'm so pleased I decided to get this definitive book on Saul Leiter. It's quite big and heavy but the content is delightful. Although known for his colour work there's a lot of monochrome images in there too.

Lovely photography book about one if the big names in the media. A great selection of his work and writing in his life. Highly recommended

If you know who Saul Leiter is, then, this retrospective will simply reinforce what an important photographer he is, yet hidden from view for a long period of his life. He was a part of the New York School, acknowledged as a documenter of the street in a style that was truely differentiated, a pioneer amongst pioneers. New photos are littered amongst his icons, his fashion work for Harpers Bazaar and Vogue, his personal studies, how his paintings and painterly work interact with his photographic eye & relationship with the other greats (artists and photographers). Fabulous stuff. If you don't know who Leiter is, are interested in photography, then this is your go to book to read and admire. Great quality printing, lovely presentation and some excellent essays on the man. Well done to Margit Erb/Michael Parillo (& SL Foundation) & to Thames and Hudson.... a classic monograph.

Yes, this book is rather expensive, but it is amazing. A big, heavy book going into greater depth on Saul Leiter than any book has before. It shows all his well-known works, and a lot of never-before-seen works. The text is very interesting as well, covering Saul's early life and much more. This is THE book on Saul Leiter: a must-have book for Saul completists, and an excellent introduction for those new to Saul Leiter.

I wanted to study Leiter's work but didn't want to pay full price. Amazon had this at a sufficient discount and it arrived as expected in good condition. An excellent book. If this is your interest recommended.

An amazing collection of Saul Leiter’s work both photography and paintings. The Saul Leiter Foundation did a great service producing this book and in a large enough format to appreciate his talents.

I bought this hoping for a solid introduction to Leiter's work and, as an amateur photographer not an aspiring art critic, am very happy with it. On these pages the art predominates. There is a lot of it, and it has room to breathe. The inclusion of Leiter's fashion photography and paintings along with B&W and color photos provides a broader view of his aesthetic than would color photography alone. For starters I'll be focusing on his layering techniques and non-standard compositional choices. Text inserts are relatively brief, to the point, and provided in font sizes that require no squinting. The binding seems sturdy. Page paper is thick, opaque, and pleasantly stiff. My only beef is the semi-jacket wrapped like a belt around the volume's midriff. How that is expected to hold up over any length of time is beyond me. With that niggling exception, I could not be more pleased with this book.
