Good Book, but not what I was expecting
I saw Paul Stamets 'Fantastic Fungi' documentary on Netflix and was fascinated, so I bought this book to learn more about his work. If I'd done a bit more research I would have realised that this is essentially a book about identification... I guess there was a clue on the cover that says quite clearly 'An Identification Guide' (Hahaha) It's not what I wanted, but I'll keep it because I think Stamets deserves the royalties and It's also got a very good 'Recommended Reading and Resources' guide at the back that contains a lot of things that I do want...

An informative mushroom identification source
Thoroughly informative book with accompanying photographs to aid identification of mushrooms throughout the world. An interesting read for anyone interested in mycology and the psychedelic genus of mushrooms.

Good but not amazing
great book but still not quite the great identifier i was looking for. we need a book with plenty/multiple photos of each mushroom that grows in Britain and Northern Europe. Someday someone will put one of these together because the psilocybin mushrooms of the british isles old book is useless unless you want to identify P Semincealata, which, come on, most people who would be interested in such a book, already know how to identify. i don't think Stamets book is even good enough to safely identify wavy caps (and there are a few more types that grow in Britain. they are a little rarer, contain a bit less active alkaloids but they're there for utilisation).

Very in depth book
This book is one the best, if not greatest detail about these mushrooms, from the history to identify each cap. Worth every penny

The best book on magic mushrooms I have ever seen.
This book should be the prize possesion of anybody interested in shrooms. It is well written, has lots of pictures, and the quality and layout of the book are very high. This book lists, describes and pictures pretty much every psilocybin mushroom currently know to man, and is an invaluble reference guide. As somebody has already mentioned, the only slight down fall of the book is that some of the photographs are a little small, but considering the sheer number of photographs in the book, maybe they have to be small to fit them all in. The book also contains tips on taking mushrooms, and information on the levels of psychoactive compounds contained within the various species. I was amazed at the number of speices of psilocybin mushrooms that can be found in the UK, as very few "normal" mushroom field guides ever mention them. I highly recomend this publication to anybody with an interest in magic mushrooms.

A comprehensive and detailed guide to Psilocybe mushrooms. It becomes quickly evident that the author is a world expert, lover and devoted researcher of Psilocybe and its close relatives. The book details the characteristics of most currently known Psilocybe fungi. A systematic method of identification is taught, based on mushroom phenotype along with comments on blueing reactions, habitats and locale. Images of each species are included and the number of species included is truly extensive. Analytical results of psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin levels are reported for many species. Differentiation of Psilocybe species from similar looking toxic and lethal fungi is covered well. Highly recommended indeed—especially compared to cheaper, poor quality, very brief Kindle ‘books’ published on this subject. This superb Guide is the only one most Psilocybe enthusiasts will ever need to buy.

This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in psilocybin. Paul Stamets masterfully weaves his expertise, a wide body of research literature, and personal experiences in to an extremely well written, organized, detailed book. The book also includes pictures. Before I had this book, I had assumed that there was only one psilocybin mushroom. Imagine my surprise to learn that psilocybin has many varieties! The book also shows why it is critical for people to either purchase/use verified psilocybin mushrooms or to follow specific steps to ensure any mushrooms that are legally found in the wild are psilocybin. There is a mushroom that looks exactly like psilocybin, but that mushroom is a deadly poison to the human body.
