I've tried badger, boar and synthetic and really keep coming back to this brush. I've used it for about 4 months and I'm quite impressed with it. You can tell by its appearance it's made from badger hair. It's got a nice look to it and doesn't have any chipping on the paint as of yet. It's super light weight. The bristles are a bit small but it really ain't much of an issue. I don't really rmeemebr the smell being that bad. Just a few uses and it had that beginning smell gone. Maybe soak it in some shaving soap for a night to help it go away faster. As for stability, the hairs do escape quite a bit. I do find a bit of hair in my shaving soap container. Overall, it easy to use. Just soak it before you shave for a while and you're good to go.

A shaving brush needs to have a sufficiently large soft bristled knot yet with enough backbone to stand up to lathering your facial beard or head. Should be of sufficient size for the task. Unfortunately, this shaving brush presents none of these qualities. Let's start with the knot and loft. The knot diameter on this brush is 18mm, as measured, with a loft of 40mm. Too small to generate and hold enough soap/water to lather your beard in one dip (w/soap puck). Personally, I wouldn't purchase a brush without at least 24mm knot and look for 45-55mm loft. The handle. Well, it's a handle and just fine by me. Although many have talked about cracks, chips, etc. Overall, the product offering is too tiny for anything other than minor beard/mustache trimming. Next, badger hair bristles. Black badger bristle is supposedly the coarsest of badger fur. I personally like black badger bristle with boar's bristle being a close second. The bristle on this brush is too soft and lacks a backbone, it doesn't readily spring back when stroked. You want some coarseness to, 1. build the lather. 2. to work the soap into your beard. 3. exfoliation. While this brush will accomplish that, with albeit significantly more time and energy, there's just too many better options. I should have followed my better judgement when I noted the Seller provided NONE of the actual key brush characteristics, i.e. loft height, knot dia., handle dia., overall length. But I gave way on what sounded like a good buy and I purchased 2 of these brushes. I'm returning the unused one. The other I'm stuck with.
