can you use JBOD on this item?

There is no RAID functionality, so it's JBOD by default.

Had anyone used the 5 bay raid version? all the reviews a see are the 4bay jbod version. amazon mixing product reviews is very annoying.

would this work plugged into a usb hub which is connected to my laptop (win 7 usb 2). also can the drives be powered off or d/c'd individually

I have had mine plugged into a hub and then into my laptop, so yes, it can be. It expect it throttles the speed somewhat, but it doesn't seem noticeable. you cant power the drives off individually, but you can remove individual drives whilst the system is running.

Can 4, 4TB discs be used in it?

I have 4 1tb ssd in mine and it is fine, I asked Sabrent support and they were very good in replying and quick. There support does try to help asap.
