Mike Simpson: Teach And Play African Drums

I have been using this book for the last 6 weeks for teaching KS2 music having managed to borrow djembe drums from our county music hub. The kids are really enjoying it and we have a playground performance coming up soon. As they are quite young I've taken it slow, introducing one new rhythm a week and I would say it takes about 8 weeks (8 45 minute lessons) to reach performance standard. I taught it by asking the children to watch a 3 - 5 minute clip of the DVD each week which I then 'retaught' to the kids (coz of the ones who didn't watch properly!) If you can't get hold of djembe drums it could be done on tambourines although you wouldn't get the different tones. It's an excellent resource and I hope to buy some more of Mike's material next year eg. Samba.
