Q: will they work for removing latex paint?

The stripping discs are more designed for taking paint off metal, they will take the paint off wood easily enough but the result is gouging into the wood and it can produce an uneven surface with a disc grind pattern. I did use a disc for some exterior latex paint removal on a house, which is why I'd not recommend using them for that process on wood or light weight metals. Sometimes you just have to use a scrapper and proper grit sandpaper to get good results. Depending on what you have to get the paint off, the non-toxic chemical citrus strippers do an excellent job also.

Q: can I grind down wood nails? i have a wooden table with nails sticking out and need to sand everything while grinding the nails out.

I've used a belt sander to remove nail heads sticking up from subflooring. Several years ago I replaced wall to wall carpet with glue down hardwood laminate boards. The builders left all sorts of nails, little lumps of plaster and mortar, etc. on the particle board base that would have interfered with the smooth installation of the glue down strips. I ran a 4x24 belt sander over the whole floor and it easily removed protruding nails lumps of mortar, etc. I forget what grit I used probably 120 but I don't really remember.

I am not sure what you are doing. I had to do a 6 x 10 trailer with 2' square tubing sides. I ordered 2 boxes and ended up using 3. If you are cleaning welds they will last longer than if you are cleaning rust. I guess how long they last depends on what you are doing? They definitely work though.
