Ideal home power backup.
Living in a rural area we experience relatively frequent power outages, often for no more than a couple of minutes, but enough to cause havoc with my media centre PC that is attached to my TV. I have used APC equipment at my workplace and it has always served me well so I decided to try one of the small home units. The BackUps 650va is indeed very small and light for a UPS. It is silent in operation and can easily be hidden away. Setting up the UPS is child's play as both Windows and OSX recognise it as soon as it is attached. The optional software is, in my opinion, the defining difference between this UPS and others. The software installed without a problem, is extremely intuitive to use and allows for all sorts of customization (that even extends to silencing audio alarms between certain times and days.) My PC is fairly powerful and draws around 200 watts in idle mode so the UPS will only run the machine for 20 minutes but that is long enough to see me through short outages and, if the power stays off for a longer period, the software safely shuts down my PC. The UPS is designed to protect computer equipment that utilize the standard PC power connector so, if you want to use it for other equipment, then you may need to buy different leads. (I have also put my Sky+ box through the UPS as it positively hates power outages but I needed to buy a 'special' lead.) IEC C14 Plug to Figure 8 Connector, 2m [Electronics ] Overall I am delighted with the look, quality and functionality of this unit and thoroughly recommend it.

An excellent UPS
I have had this uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for a year now and feel that it deserves this feedback since it has proven to be very reliable. It has done everything it is supposed to do, i.e. kept my computer system operating normally after a number of power cuts giving me more than enough time to shut down without losing data or causing any malfunction. That is over 5 minutes in my case but that time will be more or less depending on how many peripherals you are powering (I have two external hard drives, an external speaker system and printer). If that is not long enough for you maybe a larger size UPS in the same range would be better for you. The build quality is very good as you might expect considering APC provides a two year warranty period which includes an additional comprehensive insurance policy against losses caused through any malfunction of the UPS. When there is a power cut it seamlessly continues supplying 230V from its battery, giving warning bleeps to alert you if you are in another room. I have contacted the manufacturer via email for information a couple of times and they have responded almost immediately with full answers through their system of customer support which I have found to be excellent. The software package (PowerChute) that comes on a CD provides a number of monitoring and setting options that will suit most users. It may not be the cheapest UPS out there but I would say it is one of the very best for the price, and when it comes to price, cheapest is not always the most reliable, which I have found this UPS to be.

Old stock with dead batteries
I got these devices at beginning of December 2024. Just finished my computer room and plugged them in and both have the lights flashing and bleeping stating battery needs to be replaced. As it is on both of them this is not a one-off case. This is old stock with old batteries. It would cost a fortune to send these back as they are very heavy. I am trying to contact vendor to request free replacement batteries. Anyone know how to contact the Vendor?

Nice design, lasted almost a full 9 years before failure.
I purchased one of these on Nov 14 2016, and installed it a few days later, where is has remained since. It has had new batteries once in the 9 years since deployment, but recently now has failed with an error and no power output. The case design is neat and it ran very quietly. The internal electronic design avoids the use of any large failure-prone electrolytic capacitors, so this final failure is probably a failure of one of the power output switching transistors. I would have liked a longer life and may try to repair this as I have a BEng electronics, but for normal users this would be end-of-life.

I have 2 of these. One, which I had in the UK to protect my Server, Adsl Wi-Fi router and CCTV recorder. It was invaluable, as when I had to kill power or a trip switch tripped, my kit was still on until I rectified or the mains power was restored. The second one, Now living in Spain the power supply here near Figueras is krap and fluctuates wildly. At least one power outage per week so now I have MacMini, LG TV, Draytek Wi-Fi modem, SkyTV and Mini Sony HiFi system all connected to my new APC650. In the last week I have had 5 outages and each time lasting for around 5 minutes. The only thing running was all my kit connected to APC650. Safe as houses especially my Mac which I have now programmed to shut itself down automatically if the APC is starting to run low on juice if there is a prolonged outage. I didn’t get the larger version as I will be returning to UK in 2-3 years’ time when I will have the Pro Model. Spanish power is not stable and is ‘dirty’ so having my APC ensures my valuable data and equipment is protected. As I said “Get One” . You can’t go wrong.
