Q: Will this stick to melamine?

it is not sticker, you need to buy tape or stickers

Q: what size would i need for a 40 gallon tank?

I have this one on a 55 gallon tank so it would fit a 40. Just trim a bit off

Measure your tank, this item is 30 inches by 12 inches, it did not fit our tank but I do not know the gallons of our tank. NOTE: IT IS FABRIC, NOT a sticker.

Q: How do you adhere to the tank ? Do you put inside or outside ?

It’s like a silky material type scene and it doesn’t have any adhesive. I used packing tape and taped it on the outside of the back of my tank. We love the scene and how it looks.
