A Handy GPS unit...
What I like: The interface is intuitive. Easy to operate. Quick reception of satellites unlike some of the earlier gen Garmin units. Solar power works. I charged it electronically once so far. Rest of the time I've relied on Solar. The distance, direction, and azimuth features work as advertised. I like the Geocache feature. MGRS is my preferred grid reference. I went ahead and ordered a soft resin case and the carabiner attachment offered by Garmin website as "additional" items. While the unit is water resistant with an IP7 rating, you don't want to drop it due to how slippery it is. Hence the resin backcase and carabiner loop which you can attach to your pack. Accuracy is exceptional. Within 6 feet to 8 feet in less than a minute of tracking. Battery life is great. I ran it for almost 6 hours without going below 40%. I bought it when it went on sale. Paired with the Garmin app, you can access maps (purchased). You can turn on and off your phone notifications. Your weather info comes from your phone. Conclusion: It is a nifty unit for the experienced hiker. A novice will benefit from learning about map and compass land navigation first and foremost before they gain utility with this or any GPS device.

Best GPS YET
This Garmin Solar GPS IS WHAT IV BEEN WAITING FOR. This unit has it all "except color maps" instead it uses a base map with Citys. But that's ok, I never really used the map to like navigate. I use this all the time, it has a really cool feature that when standing still the compass still works, unlike other Garmin gps's iv had in past years you would need to move around to get a bearing on direction. This unit charges fast from the sun and lasts a long time. I have yet to have the battery die out on me. You can also use Garmin's APP to connect this to your phone and use advanced mapping features. If your fine without having a base map or on the GPS and trade that for battery life almost unlimited in the field this unit is for you. I own 2 other Garmin's and love these so much.

Good GPS handheld...
I use my eTrex Solar handheld in unison with my Garmin Instinct 3 watch. They both connect to my Garmin Connect app. While this may seem redundant, the eTrek offers more tracking features overall while the watch tracks my physical stats. A match made in heaven (or a factory somewhere).

Very Basic
A very basic gps (no maps just bread crums) with solar that I think if you used to charge it would over heat the screen and make it unusable. I think its more of a gimmick, because its to help the battery a bit.

Locked up, for 2 hours 41 minutes, so far...
Unit locks up, displaying "Saving" on the screen whenever any attempt is made to save activities. Requires the power button to be held down for 20 seconds or so, and does NOT save anything. Unit also is incapable of holding ANY maps, requires a cell phone to see any maps....well, uh, MY CELLPHONE ALREADY HAS MAPS!!! So, WhyTF should I give Garmin $249.99 MSRP for a "standalone" unit, which requires a cellphone to show any maps?!?!?!?!?!? This is ludicrous. I own the following Garmin products; GPS38 (which is just about as useful as the Etrex Solar, since the GPS Constellation epoc rolled over), GPS III Plus (great unit, still works), a Street Pilot III (good unit, but too big and power hungry), some sort of Nuvi (works great in the vehicle), Etrex 30X (great unit, CAN load maps, could use better battery life), and this defective, overpriced Solar Turd. Oh! And to update the software, I have to download TWO data-mining apps!!! What happened Garmin?!? Ya'll used to be a quality company.

Works great
Works great. I use this for doing back country hiking or to record mountain biking when I can't get my garmin bike computer to connect. The interface is a little to get used to but nothing too difficult. The solar charging also works as described. I have had zero issue connecting this to my phone through their app. This thing has been dropped a few times on both rocky terrain and in water, seems to hold up fine, which it should as it is kind of chunky.

A Nice Tool for Geocaching and Navigation
I like several things about this device. For one thing, it literally sips power. I like the fact that not only is it economical in its power consumption, it is constantly changing during daytime use.Any time it’s in the sun, it’s changing; whether it’s on or off. When it’s turned off and changing, the screen tells you the amount of power generated and the battery time gained. I also like not having to worry about battery replacement. Additionally it has the option to use either GPS or Multi Band GSS. The first significantly extends battery life, while the second enhances accuracy. Garmin teamed up with Geocaching giving the ETREX models the feature of “Geocaching Live “. That means it connects with Geocache and downloads the caches, locations, descriptions, hints etc. directly to the unit. When I locate a cache I can upload this into directory to my geocaching app. The ETREX syncs via Bluetooth to the Garmin Explore app allowing me to access maps, waypoints and activities. I’m not what I would term a “power user” so this basic model has all the basic tools and functionality that I need.

Love it.
Absolutely love this GPS. A bit of a learning curve for me but instructions are quite clear. Accurate and works perfectly with my iPhone. Charging is a breeze and it stays charged. Charges on my pack while I hike.

Good for running unfamiliar courses but extremely long routes are inaccurate
I bought this Garmin specially for an attempt at 200 mile run. With over 10K GPX track points it was not possible to load such a long course on Polar Vantage V watch. Garmin claims to support 10K points GPX as tracks but sadly this not the case. I realized that while I am able to load the entire route, the directions are not as precise as in the original GPX file. The solution? Split 200 miles run into GPX files with 200 points each and use it for accurate navigation. Otherwise, I have no issues. It's a sturdy device with a long battery life. The screen allows seeing ~1km of the route ahead at default resolution. Fairly good accuracy but can have issues with getting the initial GPS fix in built up areas.
