ESC WELT Quest Tower - 3D Escape Puzzle Box for Adults & Teens - Eco-Friendly Wooden Brain Teaser With Hidden Compartment - Family Mind Game

I was one of the Kickstarter backers for this and was excited to receive it recently. This is a lovely display piece and is sure to start conversations but as puzzles go it was largely disappointing. There are four main steps in the puzzle and only one left me with any feeling of agency in solving it. The first step was essentially trial and error, the second nonsensical and even after watching the solution video I'm none the wiser about what logic drove the solution. The third was the only one that felt like it made sense but was trivial and the final step was another case of trial and error. Now, your mileage may vary and if you've tried any number of these you'll probably realise that Esc Welt tend to produce puzzle boxes that are at the easier end of the scale but given the size and decoration on this I expected something more satisfying.

I'd give this a 4.5 out of 5. It was diabolically hard. Please don't depend on their web tutorial and hint system to solve it, especially for Step 2. It is rather unclear, and as near as I could tell, one step was actually the opposite of what they recommended (unless I wasn't understanding that set of instructions). I did figure it out, eventually. One thing to note. If you are planning to give this as a gift, work out solving it yourself, if possible. Do it several times. I noticed that the first two times, some of the mechanisms got stuck. It is getting better with each activation. At one point, I couldn't even get it to go back together because one of the dials jammed inexplicably. It locked in the code to release one section, but then would not unlock to reset it. Took a bit of gentle shaking and a light tapping on the base to kick loose whatever went wonky. Overall, a really great puzzle box with some difficult and non-intuitive parts. Definitely recommend. Just be careful.
