Somebody has finally cracked it.
GPD have done it. They have built the perfect android gaming device. I have tried loads of these android devices with physical controls and they've all been total rubbish. Playing games on a phone with a Bluetooth controller is ok but is it hit and miss on compatibility of games and it also kills the battery within an hour. There also the question of getting the phone at the right angle to enjoy the action properly. The build quality is fantastic. Screen is gorgeous and the buttons and proper joysticks feel right and give full control and feedback. I can finally play first person shooters on a handheld without wanting to smash something afterwards. You can download games as normal using the play store and the button mapping is already done for you on most games. Any game that doesn't support controllers can be tricked into allowing physical controls using the button mapper which is really easy to use. I find games like this unresponsive and ultimately they are not fun to play, so i stick to controller supported games.Emulation is incredible. The emulators and a games portal are already installed ready for you. No need to go trawling the web for ROMs or emulators from the play store. The games just work. Buttons are configured already so no messing around. The hardware intensive PSP emulation is hit and miss but everything else is fantastic.Battery life is unbelievable. If you turn it off in between gaming sessions it will last 24 hours no problem.Sound is great for games but a little disappointing for YouTube and Spotify. Too much bass which causes distortion at high volume.Download speeds and WiFi are excellent.I'm using the Remotr app to stream my PC games to the device. It works very well with less graphically demanding games. The clam shell design means I can pop the device in my bag and not stress about the screen or buttons getting damaged. I would play this thing in public and not feel embarrassed as it is a pocket size device that looks great.I had to pay import tax which was a tad annoying but the device is so good I don't feel hard done by.Hope I've covered everything but let me know if you have any questions.Get one. You'll love it.

Great handheld for games from SNES to N64 era, even better when you tweak it!
The GPD XD Plus is more of a luxury for me as I bought it as a birthday gift to myself. I could use my Galaxy Note 8 which I'm sure is more powerful, but I hate playing games with the touchscreen, I didn't want to bring an extra controller with me, and more importantly, I didn't want to drain the battery when my phone should be for communicating with people. Phones nowadays aren't built with long lasting batteries, especially with large quad HD amoled screens. My first unit had a bit of the metal exposed on the left hinge, and the left side of the screen wasn't fully flushed in and actually coming out slightly. I sent it off for repair to Droidbox. Although they personally didn't see much wrong with it, they offered to send back my unit or give me a new one. I chose a new one just in case and this one doesn't seem to have any flaws at all. The process was extremely quick and took no longer than a week. I'm only taking a star off as the build quality of the device may vary. I'm very happy with the customer service and the main reason why I bought it through Amazon and this company. The device so far has ran smoothly for SNES, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, DS and PSX. While PSP and N64 is good to playable speeds depending on the game. Apart from N64 which requires a bit of tweaking, all controls are mapped perfectly. I personally prefer to swap A and B to mimic Nintendo consoles which is easy enough. The screen is really nice and vibrant, you won't notice the 720p compared to a phone's quad HD screen while gaming. This actually works in its favour because the more pixels actually makes retro games look worse. You need to remember that these games were designed way before HD devices. Your best bet is to play around with the settings where you can add higher res textures or add CRT scan lines to give that nostalgic feel. This device can surprisingly be incredibly loud and I never put it above half way as it's completely unnecessary. Listening to gameplay with headphones is fine. The sound doesn't seem to crackle, but be aware that if you do hear crackling, it may be down to the emulators, so it's worth testing different ones if you have issues. The first unit I kept everything default apart from removing apps and using a new launcher, the second one I flashed with a new rom making it pretty much stock android. Without any tweaks, I found on the first unit Goldeneye on N64 ran at max 14 frames per second, but when I changed the rom on the second unit, it was running at max 28 frames per second. Keep this in mind if you find games that don't run as well as you like, there are ways to improve the performance. It just requires a bit of tweaking but there's a helpful community on Reddit if you're unsure.I forgot to mention that you can also play standard Android games too and you can manually map the physical controls to certain games. Final Fantasy IV mapped perfectly straight away.Battery is also amazing on this thing! Because I knew I was sending my first unit back, I didn't use it much when I initially got it. Standby time is incredible and depletes at a slow rate. I've read you can get at least 6 hours, although it will depend on the game you're playing. I found the device charged really quickly. Not as quick as fast charge, but it even charges from your PC/laptop at a decent speed. For me, I've managed to use this thing for a day without completely depleting the battery. I think the 720p screen helps as my Galaxy Note 8's battery depletes far, far, far quicker. I would also recommend turning off wifi if you're not using it to preserve battery even further. In conclusion, I was a bit weary when I noticed my unit wasn't as perfect as I'd like it to be considering the price. However, the customer service was excellent and sending back my unit and receiving a new one took a week max. The screen is great, the sound is unexpectedly loud and everything maps well. The only downsides are that the screen and the shell of the GPD XD Plus shows fingerprints SO easily, but that's not really a reason to not buy it. What I would keep note is that the unit quality may vary. My first unit wasn't defective per say, but I definitely noticed manufacturing differences. I would highly recommend doing some tweaking to get the best performance out of this. Overall, I'm really impressed at how far technology has come along. I'll have to see how this product holds up long term.If you want to play retro games on the go but don't want to burn out your phone's battery, this is a great little device.
