Like its predecessors, Heroes of Might and Magic IV features highly detailed fantasy worlds in a battle for territory and resources. However, this latest release showcases an all-new Height-Map Terrain Editor, which allows players to create their own graphically elevated levels. The completely random scenario and map guarantees that no two games are ever the same. Players will command armies composed of skilful heroes and fantastic creatures, collecting vital resources and artefacts as well as battling enemies and capturing towns. Strategic planning and tactical cunning are instrumental to become the undisputed ruler of a new world. When a cataclysm destroys Erathia, Emilia Nighthaven loses everything. Orphaned and alone in a strange new world, she organises the frightened survivors so they can defend themselves against those who prey on the weak. But then the Immortal King Magnus appears and demands that she give up the throne of the kingdom she founded. Not only does he have the merciless Dragon Golems at his disposal, but also a device capable of controlling the minds of those who come near him. How can Emilia defend her kingdom against that kind of power? Soon, her friends unwittingly become her enemies. Once again, she is truly alone.

One of the most durable of old games
It is nearly 15 years on and this game has been superseded by two more versions. But I would still recommend it.I won't compare it with the later games. (Every time a new game comes out it has big improvements and also attracts some probably justified complaints of dumbing down.) I just want to point out how durable its appeal has been in my family. My disc of Heroes IV got so used it eventually cracked. My children actually bought a replacement and still play it in preference to Heroes V and VI.Finally, a special mention for the music. It is the only computer game with music I liked so much I bought the sound track.

Definately worth some of your time
As a die-hard Heroes III fan, I was sceptical at the changes that have been made to the game during the first couple of hours of playing. However, if you care to view the game in its own right and not compare it to its predecessor, you are likely to find that this is an excellent game. For those unfamiliar with the series, you control an army made up of heroes (individual characters with various special abilities) and creatures that you need to recruit as you go through the game. There are two play areas - a map on which you will travel to reach other towns, collect items, find your enemies and gather resources - and a battleground on which you will control your army when fighting your enemies. The game is a strategy soaked indulgence in a medieval world with magic and monsters! It may not quite match up to its former self in gameplay, but it looks good, it plays well and will provide many hours of entertainment.Action 6/10Graphics 9/10Gameplay 9/10Atmosphere 10/10Lastability 9/10

Enough to keep on playing.
Heroes 4 is a fantastic game, and in some respects is a huge improvement upon Heroes 3. That, presumably, is what 3DO were aiming for. The graphics – yep, much prettier. The rules – yep, more interesting – heroes are now involved in combat, character development more complex. Only one complaint really – the AI is completely, utterly, stupid. Make that two – there’s no random map generator.‘Impossible’ level on Heroes 3 made for some really challenging games – both solo and multiplayer. Heroes 4, on the other hand…well, I haven’t lost to the AI since my very first attempt. Multiplayer is ok, but it tends to be decided on which human player takes the AI towns first. They just don’t seem to offer any resistance. Sure, you can design maps and give the AI huge forces at the outset – but I still end up winning. They have no idea how to defend or attack – pretty crucial skills in a strategy game.Having said this, I would still recommend the game as it has that strange, undefinable quality that makes games addictive. Heroes 3 had it, and Heroes 4 has it in abundance. Just find a friend to play it with.

Just not quite the same
For experienced HOMM players; just like HOMM3, this one takes some time to get used to. The most striking aspects I experienced are:1. A more realistic world.+ It isn't flat! Instead of moving around on ground level; grasslands and mountain-passes alike; passable ground in HOMM4 can be raised or lowered.- Characters and monster look more real and are rendered in 3D. I personally have some trouble with the dissapearance of the brightly coloured fantasy creatures.2. Towns.+ Each town can only produce 5 creatures out of 8; which gives upgrading and selecting more depth.- The town screens all look alike, with buildings that are just too small to be impressive.3.Heroes.+ More different skills, upgradable to a powerful level 5 (for instance: lvl 5 necromancy raises vampires!)+ Heroes are more balanced; the value of might is made equal to that of magic.+ Heroes fight and die during combat.+ No useless spells (mirth is really powerful!)- Each main skill (eg. life magic, combat) has 3 subskills. In order to get lvl 5 life spells; you need to upgrade it's subskills quite a bit. Which means that in small to medium scenarios, you won't be able to cast lvl 5 spells at all!4. Misccelaneous+ Creatures can move by themselves; picking up resources, joining your heroes, attacking.+ Creatures can be safely transported by caravans from town to town.+ Game designers have listened to customer-wishes! For instance loading and saving during combat.+ Scenarios remain challenging!+/- Rules of the game are slightly altered. For un-experienced players: switching from regular strategy games to HOMM4 is now not quite the culture shock it used to be in the previous titles.
