Outstanding survey. In fact, it's more than a survey. At 200 pages, the treatment of each philosopher is necessarily brief, but this means that the central theme (the rise and fall of the transcendental self) is all the clearer.

Superb.
Excellent, clear, beautifully written. So glad I bought it. Looking for other books by the same author now. Especially clear on Kant - no easy task.

Americanized and superficial
This book sadly is not a very compelling read. In some ways similar to Russell’s tendentious and superficial history of western philosophy, Solomon offers a highly subjective “story" of the "rise and fall of the self" - including numerous ad hominem criticism, superficial moralism and unduly simplistic conclusions. It often reads more like a half-baked PhD thesis than serious scholarship. Interesting for sure, enlightened certainly not.
