Goodfellas [Blu-ray] [1990]

Lovely movie

In the top 3 greatest mafia movies of all time. Beautiful cinematography, musical score... and what a cast!. And this 4k DVD andts Dolby Atmos soundtrack brought me right back to the early 90's watching it on a cinema in Paris.

I had never seen Goodfellas before this Blu Ray release. So I bought it after hearing many great things (such as being on the AFI Top 100 Movies list and a friend recommending it over the Godfather) and while I can't comment on how it compares to the Godfather (that's in the post now) I can say it was really superb. Even at close to 2 and a half hours, it doesn't feel too long. Brilliant cast and especially good performances by Pesci and de Niro, this is simply a must see movie in my book. I'll admit that the sections regarding Harry's home life weren't as interesting as the actual crime parts and this movie isn't directly about the mafia (as Harry explains, he's not allowed to join because of his half-Irish heritage) so it was a little disappointing in that regard but it's a very minor niggle and doesn't affect it overall. Blu-ray release looks good on picture although not a massive leap in terms of sound due to the fact that the movie is generally dialogue driven and there isn't a lot of action or ambiance. I'd still say it's worth the extra though.

Some time ago I decided to make a top 10 collection of gangster films but I was only able to assemble 8, 1.The Godfarther(1972), 2.The Godfather Part 2(1974), 3.Scarface(1983), 4.Once Upon A Time In America (1984), 5.The Godfarther Part 3(1990), 6.Goodfellas(1990) 7.Casino(1995), 8.Heat(1995), these gangster films most of which are based on true stories have compleatly unlikeable gangster characters of course but are played by award winning actors and directed by acclaimed film directors and can have good looking guys in them like Ray Liotta. These films are only suitable for persons over 18 years and over, they are certainly not suitable for children or teenagers, if teenagars view these films they will often become drug addicts and we certainly don't want that do we.

A classic film, but a shoddy 4K transfer. One of the very worst and lazy 4K transfers. Only buy it if you see it for a bargain, otherwise if you have the bluray you're not missing much.

Great movie, I saw it years ago and I know I'll watch it again ( and again). It's told from the point of view of one guy who, when he's a kid, sees how the gangsters live and wants that life. It shows his progression as a gangster, and the lives of F other guys too. Action, crime, great film.

Simply the best gangster film ever made in my opinion. It's a totally captivating story, and so much more than wise guys strutting around whacking each other! Even if you dont like this genre of film you will still enjoy it, my wife is a case in point, she took some convincing to watch it with me but she did, and thought it was excellent. Ray Liotta is superb as the main character and storyteller, as are Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro in the main supporting roles as his violent gangster buddies. But unlike most other ganster films the women also shine, and are far more than merely token roles. Lorraine Bracco plays the gangsters wife brilliantly, and really brings to life the excitement and fear experienced when married to a mobster. Some other reviewers are upset about the 2-sided disc setup of the DVD, this didnt bother me, i simply got up, went to the DVD player and turned the disc round. Easy. What's the fuss is about!
