The Go-Getter

Reading to ponder by
Peter Bernard Kyne has written an awe-inspiring story that he dedicated to his Chief, Brigadier-General Leroy S. Lyon, Commander of the 65th Field Artillery Brigade, 40th Division, United States Army, which most likely influenced the story behind The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to be One. Although the title sounds like a sales pitch, and possibly that may have been Kyne's intention, of selling one's self in any scenario, he tells convincing story that shows the power of first impressions. In order to understand this scenario, the story revolves around Alden P. Ricks, also known as Cappy Ricks and his lumber and logging company and his encounter with a go-getter that he described as anyone under 30 years old. And during the first few pages of the short story, the only man that he thought fit that trait was his son-in-law who he was seeking to fill a position at the company's Shanghai office. But little did he know that World War I veteran William E. Peck, a soldier who had list of unlikely circumstances after his service during the war, lost a part of his left arm, suffered a broken leg that was shorter than it should be, had a bout with pneumonia and influenza, and tuberculosis, would appear at his general office. And as he observed, illness did not stop Peck from pursuing his goal to land a job with Ricks's company. However, Rick and President of the company Mr. Skinner had something in mind to determine Peck's capability to prove his worthiness to the company. And as one reads Kyne's clever storyline, there is no denying how this narrative could have easily been included within the pages of a Dale Carnegie book. The title of the book indeed already gives the reader an idea what they may expect the storyline may be about. But that should not discourage anyone from delving into the pages of this very short story that tells an interesting perspective of how one man's persistence, logic, and common sense helped to influence his goal.

Great book!
I love this book! The truths in this book are timeless and I think everybody should read it. I had an old copy of this book (not sure where I got it from) but I lost it and wanted something that was nicer than the PDF formats I found online. This book is great. The shipping was easy and it came very quickly. I teach an Introduction to Business class at a local university and had the students read this book at the beginning of the semester. Even though there were parts of the book that were more difficult to read than others, the students understood the importance of working hard and not giving up. I would recommend this particular book to anybody who is looking for a quick, easy read on how to stay motivated.

Good Read, Great Audio
This story will have you thinking about it in the future. It's a book you can go back and read a few times if you liked it(which I did). The story itself is short, and written in an older english that today's current lingo, so I suggest getting the audio with the book, since some of the phrases are not common and may take more than once to understand. Enjoyed this read, and will definately suggest it to my friends who are in pursuit of success.

More than inspiring
I've read this story off and on throughout the years since I first read it long ago· It always inspired me w fresh resolve, I've made it required reading in life skills classes I've taught. Bill Peck, the main character reminded me of my Dad Lou, a decorated army vet, Dad led by example how to be a go getter. It's more than a great story, it's an important story…!

Question anyone who recommended this book to you
Funny how I’ve been recommended this book twice and once was by a financial adviser who was training me and one was part of a mentor pyramid scheme. The whole theme of this book is to say “it shall be done” and follow authority without any questions. Even if following orders defies common sense and laws, the protagonist ends up obeying orders and executing the tasks he was asked. It’s ok to be a go getter and do things that others are not willing to do, but I would never go to the extent of sacrificing everything I own for my employer just to prove my work ethic. It’s just not practical. I would question the motives of the people who recommend this book because a bunch of tasks will probably follow.

Awesome book!
This is a very old book, written in 1921. The language differences are apparent, but don't make it unreadable. I first read this book in the early 1980's and it literally helped to change my life. The main character in the book lives by the creed, "It shall be done." He never makes excuses, nor does he accept defeat. He continues until he completes the task at hand, in spite of circumstances. The book shows how perseverance pays off with a little twist at the end. A great read!

This is without doubt one of the most inspiring books that I ever read. It's a little book but full of excitement from the beginning to the end. I had a cocktaill of emotions reading this book. I felt joy, happiness, sadness, compassion, glee. It captivated me so much that I felt like being right in the middle of the story. I felt like being a go-getter.This book is a must read!
