Very simple plug and play device, an insurance policy against the dreaded "engine fault" light coming on
Pretty much all modern vehicles have an OBD socket. Mine is located just under the dash with a drop down cover. The ODB2 is permanently powered and provides a method of checking all of the vehicle diagnostics, useful if any kind of monitored fault occurs. A few years ago only garages and professionals owned these, but now the prices are so low anyone can add one to their tool kit. If a dash light comes on it will provide a quick and easy way to check whether it's trivial or serious.Plug it into the port and it powers up quickly, providing a variety of options for checking that everything is ok. Modern vehicle systems are highly technical and complex, so it's unlikely that a lay person would understand a fraction of the information this can provide. All we can really check for is that everything is responding and that there are no errors.Should anything untoward appear, then there are countless forums on line with people who can give advice. The real crux for me is whether I could continue to drive the vehicle in the event of an error. For this use it provide peace of mind, and also some additional info for the green flag recovery driver should disaster happen. Some form of user guide would have been useful, but I guess this would be limited by the vast range of vehicles and responses possible.Overall, I feel more confident travelling with one of these, and also that the local garage isn't going to try and bill for me for an unexpected fault at the next service.

A ODB2 scanner without codes, beware of purchase additional costs will be incurred for codes.
The description of the unit stated that it covered a wide range of vehicles within a manufacturer date range. Bought the unit and tried to use it to detect fault only to see an in app- purchase for my vehicle. The device was not cheapest and there was no mention of per vehicle purchases especially at the time of use with parts of the car being dismantled - very disappointed with manufacturer and marketing. The device did display some real-time performance parameters but my trust in the device is lost at this time.

Do the job
Arrived day after i ordered, I had a problem with the engine management light staying on, read the instructions plugged the scanner in, followed the on screen instructions and the fault code plus a fault description came up on the screen leaving me a lot wiser and knowing I can fix the problem at a reasonable cost,
