Jacaranda Tree, The

Europeans adrift out East
Another engrossing, touching, sad, uplifting novel by an author that gets under your skin. Old-fashioned? Perhaps. Passe? Never. It tells of the flight of a varied group of Europeans in the face of the Japanese invasion of Burma in the early years of WW2. It is not a novel of war, however, but rather of people - and will thus never be outdated.A point to note about Bates - count the times he uses colours in his descriptions - greens, magentas, yellows, violets and oranges brighten every page.

To be expected
Some of the pages fell out but otherwise acceptable and perfectly readable so feel the sale was satisfactory and am satified

Very Evocative
The best of his books that I have read so far, if you are interested in what the Brits were like at the time, Japanese invasion of Burma, you could hardly get a better representation.A Beautifully crafted book from start to finish

Wonderful...!
I just love these novels which seem quite plausible and "could have happened".One of my "at least once-a-year" readers.

description minutieuse d'une micro-societé coloniale britanique et de la nature !
SI vous avez aimé "Sortilège malais " de Somerset Maugham,et les livres se deroulant dans l'Empire britannique , vous adorerez "the jacaranda tree" de Bates !

Excellent Writing
If you haven't read any H. E. Bates, consider starting with his WWII novel, Fair Stood the Wind for France. I found The Jacaranda Tree got a bit bogged down 3/4 of the way through, and I would have liked more resolution at the end and more background on the central character, Paterson. There were a few other, but minor, unexplained details, and too much description of dust!! Still very much worth the read.

Good backgrounding
A well written story of colonial times on old Burma and good background reading before travelling to today's Myanmar. Very evocative.
