If you are a total beginner, use the Gateway to Arabic handwriting book, then start with this one. You get a very good grounding in the simplest of Arabic grammar, without all the fluff topics like buying plane tickets or what's for dinner tonight. This means that you have an excellent base from which to start reading Arabic and actually understanding it, rather than having lots of superfluous vocabulary. It is advisable to have a teacher, and that does not have to be an Arab! I learnt from native English speakers who had studied this book as beginners themselves."Madinah Book 1", as it is so widely informally known, gives you the roots of your Arabic tree - others only give you the branches.
