if you gamsol to blend prismacolor pencils, do you need to use special watercolor paper?

No. Put a little bit into a jar with cotton balls. Then take your blending stump and touch it to the cotton balls to allow it to absorb a bit of the liquid. You don't want the stump soaked, just damp so you don't need much and the cotton balls allow you not to have to dip the stump directly into the liquid, getting it too wet. You then just use the blending stump to move the color. After it dries, you can apply more layers. Just be sure you have already a few layers down as it works with the wax. Not enough layers and it doesn't give the desired effect.

is gamsol thicker than odorless paint thinner?

I don't know if it thicker. Gablin is thin and clear and maybe a bit oily looking but works great and doesn't smell.
