They do work but with some extra effort.
I bought these for use with my home countertop unit. I'm on to the second filter and had different experiences with both. With the first filter I installed it and then primed it by running water for 15 minutes. Immediately I saw weird rust-colored splotches appear on the filter, which is odd (The unit has a clear housing). The water tasted awful; like it wasn't filtered at all. However after running the water off and on for two or three days it got a lot better. For the second filter I decided to soak it in a long food container with a lid; changing the water out multiple times a day for about three days. I also held it up to the water filter spout and wetted it inside and out from time to time. I did see the weird rust-colored stains on this one, too and still don't know what they are. This time the water tasted better much sooner after installing (if I'm not counting all the time pre-soaking it that is!) Not ideal, but I waited too long to install them and was past the time to return them...so I made the best of it! The water flow is very strong compared to other filters I've used. Which is nice when filling large bottles or cooking pots. Once they're working they do keep the water tasting good for a long time.

...worst carbon filters I have ever used...!!
DON'T USE..!..NO FILTRATION..!!..I have been using carbon filters on two sinks in my boat to filter tank water for the past 15 years...some have worked better than others, usually getting a few months use before beginning to taste chlorine...these filters had NO EFFECT on reducing water taste, especially chlorine....I bought two cheap 5 micron carbon filters from Home Depot to have water and after installing from the first cupful of water there was no chlorine or other bad tastes...!!...after cutting one open did not see any evidence of the "3 layer filtration" claimed in the description, just a compressed black cylinder of some black material...and 1 micron filtering ??...hah...don't expect these to filter anything...!
