So I just received this and was super confused too. Appearantly all you have to do is tighten it and everything will lock into whatever position it's in when you tighten it.

Can I use this to mount an external flash?

The arm should be strong enough. You should be able to find a threaded 1/4-in adapter to mount your flash. If you are using professional equipment, many pro flash units are equipped with a 1/4-in threaded mount. You may also consider using this mount for slave flash unit (with or without reflector), for use as a secondary or fill-light.

I am hoping to mount a Arlo solar panel outside. Will this rust?

I'm not sure about the rust. I tried to find what it was made out of but I would ask this question directly to the company.

Could I safely attach this to my roof rack for mountain driving?
