How long is the shelf life for this opened and unopened?

Don't take this as a definitive, medically-approved answer; I can speak only for our own home practice. I bought three bottles, and the (unopened) third one was on the shelf for over a year. It was just fine when we used it. As for the opened bottles in the fridge, we find that they last for months with no change in taste or texture. You can contact your local public health office and ask them about longevity of condiments. My public health office is always very helpful.

How is this on spare ribs? -as a marinade or as a sauce on individually sliced cuts that get slow, low, dry heat? Does it grill well?

It's not worth the price to try and find out. Just go online and do a search for Tonkatsu sauce. There are a ton of recipes available.

Anything with tomatoes naturally has msg. Msg is nothing but another sodium. Many people eat tomato based sauces and doritos all the time and claim asian food with msg gives them head aches.
