Tapo Smart Switch, S515, Single-Pole/3-Way/4-Way, Matter Compatible

I purchased to automate the lights in my garage, tying it to when I unlock and lock the entry door to the garage. I needed a matter compatible 3-way switch and this does the trick. My garage lights are on a 3-way switch, which makes for a more complicated install especially if you're only replacing one switch vs. replacing both. For setup, it's important to determine which is the master and which is the slave as I would need to change out the master for it to work. Wiring it up requires connecting 5 wires. The first thing to note is that this switch requires a neutral wire, which older switches do not, so I only have 4 wires coming out of old switch. The Tapo and most smart switches require a neutral wire so first thing is to make sure your house wiring supports it else the smart function will not work. On the old switch, there's ground (easy to identify as it's usually bare wire) and then 3 additional wires for line and 2 travelers. One of my traveler wires was red making it easy to identify but the other 2 wires were both black. I initially installed the other two wires incorrectly mixing the 2nd traveler with the line. Once I turned on the power, the lights began flickering on and off. Easy fix, just needed to turn power back off and swap the 2 black wires between line and traveler. Once corrected, the switch was working. Now for me, the hard part was getting this module to fit into my box as it's bulkier, so it took effort to make it fit. First, adding to the Tapo app on my phone was straight forward and only took a few minutes to get it added. Next I wanted to add the switch to Apple Home which was also fairly easy as Apple Home found it right away, so I didn't need to use the matter code. The matter code can be generated in the Tapo app if it's needed. With this switch and my smart lock both on Apple Home, I was able to quickly set up simple automations to turn the lights on and off whenever the smart lock is unlocked and locked. I can also easily turn on and off the lights remotely with my phone. The switch matches the look of my other switches and and was perfect for my install into a double gang box. It does also come with a single wall plate, which would look great on a single gang install, but for my needs, I didn't use it. This switch does not dim, but that was not a feature I needed. Overall, this switch is a good value for the functionality it offers.

TP-Link Tapo Smart Switch – Single-Pole / 3-Way / 4-Way, Matter Compatible This is another useful piece in the TP-Link Tapo smart home ecosystem. In my house I run more than 50 Tapo devices including dimmers, switches, and smart outlets. These switches are especially helpful when dealing with multi-location lighting setups such as 3-way or 4-way circuits where the same light is controlled from multiple switches. Tapo does a good job covering these situations so you can still integrate those circuits into the rest of the smart lighting system without complicated workarounds. Installation was straightforward and once added to the Tapo app the switch worked just like the rest of the system. It integrates easily with routines and voice control through Alexa, and the Matter support allows for fast local response even if the internet connection drops. Like the other Tapo switches in my house, it has been stable and reliable over the past year of use. If you’re building out a larger smart lighting system and run into a multi-switch circuit, it’s nice to know Tapo has an option that fits right into the ecosystem.

I installed 3 Tapo smart switches. Me: DIY person. Easy to install and super easy to connect and set up on Tapo App. [Appreciated]. I replaced two modern lighting electronic timer switches that have tiny screens and are not easy to program. The Tapo smart switch has an easy menu to program off and on times making it a breeze to control porch and patio lighting. Installation tips: 1. if the switch you are replacing is a 3 way or 4 way unit, the Tapo works perfectly but needs to be installed in the primary switch junction box. You can easily determine this by testing for current in the "line" wire when the switch is turned off. It will retain current when the switch is on or off. If the current stops when the switch is off, then that is not the primary switch in your 3 or 4 way set up. The included instructions explain this as well. Tip 2: verify your existing wire function before removing and installing new Tapo switch. While there are code and industry standards, the previous installer may have deviated. This includes verifying the traveller wires, often one red and one black, but this can vary. Also, the line and load [load goes to light in this case] wires may both be black. A noncontact voltage tester or multimeter can be used to discriminate. Tip 3: take pictures of old switch wiring before removal. This can help if you forget the wire origin. I removed and installed one wire at a time to minimize mix ups. Tip 4: The old wires may have been stripped too long which can expose the conducting copper after installed in the Tapo. This is easily fixed by snipping off any excess copper wire. Tip 5: The Tapo switch includes a single switch plate. If you are installing into a multi- switch junction box, the reused 2 or 3 or 4 switch plate cover will probably not fit totally flush over the top section of the Tapo switch at the screw hole because the switch body plate is a little thicker than a regular switch. I remedied this by shaving off small amount of plastic on the back side of the switch plate cover. ( see picture). This allowed a flat and flush mount onto the wall. I used a box cutter to remove a tiny amount of the plastic. Tip 6: Use of a power screwdriver (not a drill) saves time when removing and installing the two long switch mounting screws. Good luck on your project. Tapo smart switches highly recommended.

Be ready to install twice! Okay , maybe that isn't fair. It's partially my fault. I've replaced upwards of 30 or so light switches in the past few years and I thought I knew what I was doing with a 3 way switch. I had previously installed one in my garage. No issues. So figured I would also update a light switch that is used to turn the light on for the stairs. My wife wants it on at night, and I want it off during the day, so it was perfect for some automation. unfortunately I chose the wrong leg to install it on first, so the load was coming from the other switch and not from panel. I flipped through the manual and didn't see anything in their about requiring it to be on the hot leg, although that does make sense. Other than my confusion, the Installation is pretty easy as the load and traveler can be swapped to either load wire. I also prefer more screw in terminals on smart switches as with some of the cheaper switches I've used end up jamming the whole box with wire nuts and having screwed in terminals feels much safer. Long story short, I reinstalled on the other switch and discovered that that was the hot side for this circuit. I should have known by the way the circuit was labeled and how the switches were grouped, but oh well. Other than my confusion, I'm happy with the tapo switches overall and will likely buy another if I ever have the need. I wish therer was a bit more positive feeling on turning the light on or off, sometimes it's easy to push on the wrong part of the switch and not make it click on or off.

I had been waiting a long time for a simple no hub solution for 3-way switches and this was it. I have a lot of other Tapo switches and they work great and this was no different. As long as you can identify which of the switches in your 3-way arrangement is the line side and which is the load this goes in as easy as the single pole. Integrates well with both Alexa and Siri. Only real knocks on this is that the relay is a bit loud when switching and it’s a big block to go into the junction box. Took a bit of maneuvering and time to be able to get the wires cleared to get it fit into the box. However that’s not enough to take a star as is part of the trade off to having a smart switch and they are all like that and just took some extra time for wire management. I was also installing into a 4 switch box with one other smart switch already so was even tighter. Once the install is done it’s fantastic and does exactly what you need. The Tapo app isn’t amazing but it works and thanks to the Matter support it’s easy to hook into the smart assistants and manage it there.

It was fun learning about how 3-way switches work. I was lucky enough to have gotten the correct switch on my first try. What I mean by that is that this switch will only work on the light switch that has the line coming into it. Only one of the two 3 way switches have the (power) line coming into it. You'll need to know which one that is and attach to that one. I'd suggest figuring that out first because if, for example, you're upgrading all of your downstairs switches to be smart switches and not the upstairs ones but the upstairs one is the one with the line coming in, then you'll be in an awkward situation. Easily solvable by just getting a similar styled switch for downstairs that isn't smart, but it's something you should be aware of. Once installed, setup in the Tapo app is easy, as is connection to the Google Home. It's Matter enabled, so that's great for people who don't want to be attached to a cloud service provider (works with Home Assistant).

Completely useless. When I first installed it, it paired with my SmartThings hub fine. Then, after a couple of weeks, it disconnected from the hub. Trying to pair it again failed multiple times. I then downloaded the Tapo app and tried to pair it with that - no luck. Basically, it just isn't worth the hassle, and I'll just use it as a dumb switch. I wonder why TP-link products are all so bad. I have two TP-link routers, and they are way more trouble than they are worth. TP-link support sucks as well.

I would have rated these with a 5 stars but, I have an issue where all the lights I have associated with these switches just randomly turn off and on! They work well, easy setup and I can control them via Alexa which is really great and I like that feature. My only two issues are the lights turning on and off randomly and the fact that customer support is basically non-existent in the app. In the Tapo app, there is no option to contact customer support. I will continue to try and reach customer support via their website to see if I can resolve the random switching. Not sure if anyone else has this issue but it’s not just one switch, I have several and they all do it. Must be a ghost operating my switches :) To be continued!

Perfect fit for smart home with 3 or 4 way switch. Make sure you have a non-contact voltage tester to see which is the master switch and once you done it the installation is easy and simple.

Used it for a 4 way connection, put it at the end of the loop so the other lights switches work, no issues
