Great, but need burn-in.
I have had my DT990 250ohm headphones for over a month now, and they have roughly 100-150 hours on them. I listen to my headphones all day long, as I am an online student. I bought them to replace my Sony MDR-7506's which I am still very happy with. When I first plugged them into my uDAC-2 and listened to them, I was massively disappointed. I mean DEVASTATED. I HATED them. They sounded muffled, distant and completely lacking any dynamics. I went back to my Sony's to compare, and I immediately wished I could turn back time. The Sony's sounded far better, clearer and more engaging. Figuring I was going to need to sell them, I let the DT990's burn-in for the rest of the day to make sure. In the next few hours I started noticing that everything sounded pretty decent. I wondered if it was more my ears getting used to the sound, so I popped my Sony's on again to compare. I actually preferred the 990's now. Over the next few days it only got better, and now there is simply no comparison at all. The Beyerdynamics are far superior, and sound great. I am very confused with the terms people are using to describe these headphones, like 'bright.' I cannot for the life of me understand what these people are talking about. These are not too bright, or harsh in any way. Perhaps some people have very sensitive ears, I don't really know. The bass is incredibly deep and powerful, and the mids are pretty good. Admittedly, the mids are a tad recessed, a product of the scoop shaped EQ that these headphones come with. For me though, the way that they engage you in the music with their clarity and bass makes up for it. You will really enjoy listening to these. The uDAC-2 was more than enough to power these, but my PC alone could not do it. They were much too quiet without an amplifier. The ability to hear outside noises is better than a noise-canceling type headphone, but with the volume up is still quite encapsulating. The sound coming out from them at high levels is definitely audible, but not obnoxious. At mid-low volume they are almost silent. The comfort is insane, they go completely over your ear and you forget you're wearing them. I thought my Sony's were comfortable, but now the way that they are 'on' my ear is annoying. The Beyer's are just so comfortable, even after hours and hours of listening. I never experienced any fatigue at all from these, despite listening to them at very high levels for extended periods of time. They sound great with games, movies, TV, music, anything you throw at them. Overall, I just can find anything wrong with these headphones. They sound great, look great and feel great. If you can get an amp for them, I would say they are a no-brainer. Just a blast to listen to.

O. M. G. - What just happened?
I got these after reading a Gazillion reviews and after just writing a review on another brand after my wife got me a pair of Sennheiser HD280's. These are simply on a completely different level! I don't really mean to wax poetic; but; Holy Guacamole Batman! Let's start with some basics... Shipping and Unboxing... As usual Amazon did an amazing job, got these to me in two days (don't have prime? What are you waiting for?!!!) The packing was well thought out, and quite clever I might say. the cans were positioned in a way that they would not jostle around. Nice! The headphones come in a very nice carrying case with more than adequate foam padding to ensure my precious babies don't get harmed ;) Look and feel... D.A.M.N. these cans eek quality, from the velour ear pads to the aluminum and high end plastic construction. They feel luxurious, are insanely comfortable and look amazing, if I might say so. My Sennheiser's look cheap and bland in comparison (still sound great though), these DT-990's look so good i am going to get stand to display them! That said, this is all about the sound though, isn't it? So let's get to that... These headphones are ridiculous, I will start off by stating publicly that I don't consider myself to be an "Audiophile" (too hispter for my tastes) I am just a music lover that has been listening to music for the past 45 years. I am an IT exec that was in his past a sound engineer and radio DJ. I know what kind of sound I like and I LOVE THE WAY these cans produce sound. I am beyond impressed and i haven't even waited for the burn in! The sound stage is greatly expanded. I know this sounds crazy, but it is almost like i am seeing the music instead of listening to it. Trust me, I sat in a darkened room, listening to remastered version of my favorite album, Dark Side of The Moon and it was simply delightful! Dudes if you knew me you'd know delightful is not a word I'd ever use, but WOW! The bass is tight, detailed and fast. Not heavy like bass head cans, but very real and present. The mids are there and not at all drowbned by the highs as I read others opine. I seriously am thrilled! I usually research my buys to the nth and this one paid off. They are not sibilant, at least not for my 50 year old ears. I did not find the aforementioned v shaped sound. i simply adjusted my EQ to my liking and simply enjoyed the music. a lot, A LOT - A LOT! Impressed doesn't cut it. i am an no B. S. type of guy and I can say without hesitation these headphones delivered and then some. color me impressed! Me = Happy Happy Camper :)

Amazing, absolutely best headphones in this price range!
Best headphones for this price. I consider myself an audiophile and own (or owned) several headphones in $50 - 400 price range and monitor speakers in up to $2000 range. Also, since I live in New-York I could test-drive dozens of headphones in up to $400 range and nothing could beat Beyerdynamic DT-990 Premium. Pros: - Crystal clear highly detailed sound. You can give them music of any complexity and they will handle it very well. They will not produce just some mess or start distorting instruments. You will still hear every instrument clear and undistorted. - Wide and airy sound stage. You don't feel like the sound source is near your ears. It feels like the stage is around you and music is light and flowing in the air around you. - The bass is perfect. They can handle any bass, they will not start crackling. The amount and quality of bass are ideal. I don't want any more or less. It feels very natural. - Excellent build quality. Feels premium. I have been using them every day for 3+ years and they are still in great condition. - Very comfortable to wear them for any period of time - Price. They are not in a cheap range, but I doubt you will find anything better for the same price. Cons: - Personally, I prefer a little bit warmer sound. But they are definitely not cold, they are neutral. - Again, personally, sometimes, I prefer a little increase in the voice range (~1KHz), but these headphones are, again, neutral. But voice lovers can use equalizer to fine-tune whatever they want. Also, when I just got them, I thought that their high frequencies are too high, but later, after comparing with other reference headphones and monitor speakers I understood that their highs are actually correct (I had just gotten used to my previous Sennheizer headphones with weaker highs). After some time I got used to their high frequencies and now they seem very good to me. I have another audiophile friend who has been crazy about music for the last 30 years and has a lot of hi-fi equipment. After he had listened to these headphones, he agreed with me that he had never listened to such good headphones in this price range and he ordered one pair for himself straight away! :) I highly recommend these headphones to all people who love music and value real quality sound.

Wow!
I really like these. They have some exceptional aspects to them and they have a few glaring flaws. I talk with alot of headphone owners that have "no/high" budgets and one thing is common. They have all owned these at one point. They all loved them and they have all moved on to a different headpone. That said here is my impression: Pros: * These are very comfortable. * The soundstage is big. Can almost be too big sometimes. I lose the music on certain tracks. * The bass kicks. its deep, forward and in your face. Like gentely hitting the back of you head with your fist. Not that bad. * I find these to have great details. Example: I simultaniously listening to bass and piano in a song. It feels full and wide. * These are well made and for the current price A steal. * These are a premium set of headphones. Know this is true no matter what anybody says. Cons: * The sound curve on these is "scooped". The mids are recessed. I notice this more on some tracks and less on others. I paired it with a nice tube headphone amp and this helps alot. But on certain songs, I just know something is wrong and alot of times I can get past that and alot times I can not. I have real mixed feelings about these. I can say that I listen to them every day and enjoy them. I have also heard the Denon D-5000 and these have a slightly forward midrange, a deeper tone and a lower frequency. The bass is still strong and they sound much better to me. They are also more than twice the price. So, If you want closer to prefection. I would go there. If not these are really nice.

Second best headphones vs HD600, AD1000, 60i, and t90s.
So, I was looking to upgrade my Grado 60i to something with a larger soundstage, to aid me in being horrible at games like BF4 and H&G. I also was looking for more detail in MMOs like GW2 and Black Desert. I had the 60i, HD 600, ATH AD1000, and the t90s. They all were so different. Regarding these, the are sooo comfortable. It is like having baby seals on your ears. These are by far the best earpads. The soundstage was great and the resolution or clarity of each instrument or track was impressive. The only reason I returned them was because of the occasionally harsh high treble. The best way I can describe them is when a high pitch sound comes through the headphones, it would sometimes be so overbearing that it gave me the same feeling as chewing on tin foil. Like a shock to the system. I tried to work through it and even played around with the EQ but it just wasn't gunna work. As compared to the ATH AD100, the best way I could describe the difference is that the DT990's sounded three dimensional and the AD100s sounded two dimensional. The ADs had more rumbling base and no overpowering highs. The also were not as comfortable. The earpads clamped on the bottom of your jaw. As compared to the HD600s, the HDs had some soundstage but less than the DTs. I also wanted to really keep the HDs because everyone raves about them but when compared to the resolution of the DTs they just couldn't keep up. For music only the HDs would be fantastic. So what I did it try out the t90s, another Beyer set. Their Tesla tech. I found them amazing. The highs were not as harsh and the resolution was even better. You can distinctly hear every instrument and detail with the t90s. They were not as comfy as the DT990s because they use memory foam pads instead of the baby seal earpads on the DTs. But I may end up swapping them out in the end anyways. Conclusion - try the DT990s and if you can handle the harsh highs then go for it. If you have a few extra bucks then jump into the Tesla tech and go for the t90s. I love them.

Another winner
I like these headphones along with other Beyerdynamics.I own the Amiron wired and dt880 premium also.I gave my dt 990 pro to a friend that I loved trying to turn him onto the Beyer sound. I have more expensive Grados also in my collection. The 990's (250 ohm) must be driven by a decent headphone amp.I use a Schiit Asgard 3, Bifrost 2 dac,and Loki eq .I wont go into all the accolades about the sound as been mentioned numerous times, however, they just sound very good to me.I enjoy the Beyerdynamic sound. They are somewhat bright but that can be adjusted by lowering the treble slightly. They most certainly are more comfortable than even my 700 dollar Grado rs1e and other Grados I own.To me the sound of the 990's punches way ahead of their price ! I am not one of those who use headphones with cell phones or straight from a computer.I cant emphasize enough that it would really serve you well to get an amp and dac to use with any headphones.Even if you bought the 32 ohm version. You can get an amp and dac for 200 bucks plus tax from Schiit Audio(Magni amp and Modi dac) . I cant comment on the longevity but I hope I encounter no problems. My other Beyers are 2 years old and still kick ass in sound quality and structural integrity. These cans just eludes a great smooth high resolution sound that makes me a happy camper.I encode all my music in 24 bit Flac even from burnt 22 year old cd-r's that still work. and sound wonderful with the 990's .Their is a reason Beyerdynamic has been making this model for years due to the great sound quality. Keep in mind they may sound a bit harsh at first so dont judge them till after a minimum of 20 hours.

these are hands down the best headphones i've ever used for either department
I will go ahead and say I primarily use these for gaming, but I also use them for music a lot too. With that being said, these are hands down the best headphones i've ever used for either department. I decided to buy these after being unhappy with my Astro A40 TRs, and I have to say they're better in every way. They're the most comfortable headphones i've ever worn as the pads are memory-foam, so it feels like you have a pillow pressed up against your ears. The headband has a small layer of padding on them and sit very comfortably on your head. The headphones are light and i've honestly never felt discomfort while wearing them and I have worn these for 8-10 hours straight before. Now to the most important part, which is sound. And in that, I have to say that these headphones are amazing. When it comes to gaming these are probably the best all around/fun headphones you can use. They have a great soundstage so you can pick up on enemy positions easy and know where they are. The bass is warm, with the mid-range and highs being very crisp. If you're looking for a pair of these for gaming I would definitely recommend. They're open back and have that amazing soundstage which makes them great for competitive gaming, but at the same time it doesn't compromise on overall sound and makes the game sound very natural and how it was meant to sound. As for music, these are wonderful. I remember the first time I wore these I put on Faces by Mac Miller and I was so in awe by how incredible it sounded. It was like I was there, as I could literally hear things in the songs I couldn't hear before and almost pick up on where the instruments were positioned. As for the looks of this headphone, it might look like an A/C unit strapped to your head at first but they've kind of grown on me looks wise. All in all for the price, I completely recommend.

Awesome, definitely need a headphone amp to power the 250 Ohm version.
So this is an out of the box review of the 990 edition, so first 24 hours of ownership. I am a bit of a headphone nerd so can tell pretty quickly if I’m going to like a pair of headphones. I currently own AKG 702 & 7xx, senn HD6xx and Philips X2HR headphones so I am comparing the 990’s to those directly. I bought the “edition” version as I wanted a straight cable and the few other tweaks they’ve made to make them more “home friendly”. Build and design: so they look cool, better in person and feel well built (much better than AKGs for example). I would’ve liked the shells and grills to be metal but this would increase cost and weight so not necessary and purely aesthetic. Comfort: these are very comfortable. When you first put them on they don’t feel like they are going to be as comfortable as people make out but very quickly you forget you’re wearing them. I would rate them right up there on comfort out of the box. Most people rave about 650/6xx being comfortable, rubbish, those things hurt unless you’ve got a peanut sized head or you stretch out the headband which is easy to do. These need no “breaking in” in the comfort dept. Sound (most important bit): these are right up there with the best at under 500 dollars/pounds. They seem to tick all the boxes and combine all the best bits of the other headphones. They have plenty of bass but not too much, clear highs and have an airy feel to them or “wide soundstage” for all the audiophile nerds out there. Negatives: I have got the 250 ohm variant and they are a beast to power. I have the 300 ohm 6xx and the 990’s are harder to power than those. I have a zen DAC currently which powers them ok but I’ve had to crank it to over 2 O clock on the DAC to get a good volume level (I do listen to metal so quite loud). The zen isn’t the most powerful so your mileage may vary but a headphone amp is a must for these. Go for the lower resistance headphones if you don’t want to buy or do not have a headphone amp. I love these headphones and they are definitely going to be keepers. My 702’s have already been packed away!

Genial compra.
