My favorite Marvel NOW title continues to deliver
This has been my favorite Marvel NOW title so far. Here we see Cyclops continuing to gather new mutants into his fold, while also dealing with the fact that the adults on the team are not in complete control of their powers. I've always loved Illyana as a character, and what she goes through early on, dragging the team into a fight with Dormammu, was great stuff. As usual, Bendis creates individual personalities for all of his characters, causing them to react very differently to the situations they find themselves in. It's one of the things I love most about Bendis's writing. Plus we get to see Magneto doing what he does, following Cyclops when it's convenient for him, but not feeling as if he had to report in to him on what he was doing at any given time. I've really enjoyed seeing the evolution of the relationship between those characters ever since Cyclops became mutantkind's undisputed alpha dog after the events in Messiah Complex, and this has been another great chapter in that story.Great art throughout as well, with Irving's dark and chaotic art giving a great feel to Limbo during the first two issues. If you are an X-Men fan, get on this series. Great stuff.

2 for 2
Consistently entertaining, fast-paced, grey area mutant goodness. So far trades 1 and 2 were well worth it!

The artwork in this copy wasn't as good as the first book
The artwork in this copy wasn't as good as the first book, a lot of the faces seemed copy & pasted which was disappointing. The storyline seemed like filler rather than a story.

A desperate Uncanny X-Men team face challenges within and without
This second volume of Brian Michael Bendis' Uncanny X-Men picks up the story from when Angel decides to leave his time-travelling team-mates behind at the Jean Grey School and strike out with adult Cyclops, Magneto and crew. It's a decision he has instant cause to regret as Magik loses control of her powers - just like her colleagues', broken by the Phoenix Force - and the team are drawn into Limbo by a vengeful Dormammu. The Dr Strange villain's play for the Limbo dimension hints at much larger consequences of the Phoenix event to the wider Marvel universe, with the Dark Dimension apparently affected by the changes happening in Limbo. Magik's wonky powers are now destroying Limbo, which in turn is having wider effects. Dormammu is ostensibly seeking revenge for the disruption of his realm, but his wider goal seems clearly to be killing Magik so that the wound is staunched. It sets the scene for an atmospheric, desperate battle between the X-Men, their completely green students and a horde of Mindless Ones.Magik manages to resolve the issue with a rather drastic solution, which leads her back in time to consult with Doctor Strange himself about the way in which she is losing control. Again, it's a desperate move, and desperation is very much a theme of this volume. Despite their big rhetoric and bigger actions, Cyclops' group is cracking under the pressure. Without a word of dialogue, Frazer Irving serves up an image of Magneto struggling with his loss of control, flashing back to the events of X-Men #1, when Magneto was at his most unbalanced and physically powerful. There is desperation elsewhere - in new mutant Fabio's parents, for instance, who react to their son's powers coming into bloom with sheer denial (in one of the clearest parallels to LGBT life in an X-book, his mum bemoans that it's "because we didn't go to church" while his father suggests that the X-Men may have molested his son and 'turned' him). And there is also desperation from Maria Hill and SHIELD, who recruit Dazzler as their mutant liaison - only for her immediately to be targeted and replaced by Mystique, in her latest mysterious power play. This volume ends with a blistering confrontation with a Nimrod-esque Sentinel (a Blockbuster Sentinel, no less), in an issue narrated by Cyclops. It's the first time that we've had him provide the commentary, and his self-doubt is clear. At one point he is on his knees and seemingly ready to die, accepting it as perhaps the price he needs to pay to put human/mutant relations on the path to where they need to be. Perhaps the whole arc should be named "Martyr CompleX".It's another solid book from Bendis and this team of artists, who have taken X-Men to the next level.
