Bowling Beyond the Basics: What's Really Happening on the Lanes, and What You Can Do about It Review: Good book - good book, helps explain the technical aspects of bowling and what is fact and fiction. Review: A very comprehensive, rigorous analysis of bowling - Although this is the first full-length bowling book I've read, it's hard to imagine one being more rigorously analytical or more complete. I state my opinion after having dutifully read countless articles and watched innumerable videos over the years. The writing style reflects the analytical experience that the authors must have already undergone: they first present popular (mis)conceptions and (mis)understandings and critique them, before describing and rigorously supporting their own conclusions. This writing approach adds significantly to the length of the book, but I presume it was adopted to help cement the reader's understanding. Early on, they say theirs is not a "how to" book, though in fact abundant practical advice is peppered throughout. Most analyses were well supported, though I (as an engineer) took issue with a couple of points the authors made. First, though they are correct in noting that an "n%" faster delivery of an "n%" lighter ball delivers more kinetic energy to the pins than a slower delivery of a heavier ball, they seem to assume that humans will always deliver a lighter ball faster--which is not the case for everyone's style. Also, their criticism of the 3-6-9 spare shooting system seems to involve a faulty analysis based on their focus on the board at which the ball crosses the foul line, rather than on foot placement at setup on which the 3-6-9 system is in fact based. Regardless, the book is full of self-evidently solid analysis and clear presentation, with the terribly grueling mathematics wisely relegated to appendices. Wisely, they close their book by modestly encouraging others to pick up where their book leaves off. This book's clear, comprehensive, analytical approach should make it a healthy study and a good reference for years to come.

This book is for the serious bowler
Not a book for the beginner....this book goes into detail fo bowling and the technology of bowling that beginners probably don't want or need. This is truly a book for the serious bowler. I enjoyed it as it provided a detailed analysis of what goes on during the game. It is great for bowler improvement if you need to understand physics of bowling and the outcome of a new ball or new swing etc... A good investment to augment bowling lessons or coaching. Myl coach recommended it and I found it worthy of the time to study the mechanics of bowling.

Highly recommended
Great book for learning more about bowling technique. Also, it teaches the 3-6-9 spare system, a MUST for a great spare game. I'm a league bowler....this is a really good book.

Bowling beyond the basics
This book has a lot of information on bowling. I’m a beginner, this book is quite technical, so I skipped to the chapters pertaining to what I needed.

very analytical approach to bowling
Well reasoned and well done explanation of many aspects of the game. The explanations are in plain terms but uses the math to support his conclusions.

Interesting reading but maybe too technical for some readers.

The technical book I always wanted to read but did not know it existed, complements well books about the mental aspect of the game a does what it sets out to do. Highly recommend to all bowlers regardless of their experience.

The information on effect on ball speed, ball weight, how revs are generated, how to build and arsenal and what adjustments you can make very informative. Only downside for me was the discussion on 3-6-9 spare system. It is all based on the bowlers approach being straight down the approach which requires them to change their upper body angles. The ETBF recommends going towards target line and using a straight ball, which works mathematically as well.
