Battery Balancer

Corrected an issue I had with cheap unbalanced lifepo4 batteries. Brilliant example of design and functionality. People here seem to be confused in some of their reviews: - Doesn’t turn on? Its only supposed to be on greater than 27.2 volts on charging and discharging. Its there to correct the last 10-15% of the charge cycle. - Can’t see it doing anything? Get a volt meter, look at your manufactures BMS app at individual batteries or the green light on the front. - Can’t tell the difference between cell balance and battery balance? The internet echo-chamber is 80% wrong on this point because unknowledgeable people don’t know the difference and use the terms interchangeably. Cell balancing is always done by the BMS, so check your battery app. Battery balancing is at battery level, and only when there are >= 2 12volt batteries in series. - Brought it because it was blue? Its good protection to extend the life of lifepo4’s by avoiding over-charge and over-discharge. You batteries will live years longer and not swell up/degrade as fast due to over-charging. - Lights never come on? You’re not charging at the correct voltage. - Green light always on? That means it’s working great and already done it's job. - Red lights flashing a lot / all the time above 27.2 volts before green light goes on, or never comes on? One or more of your batteries could be defective already or your series string is mismatched. Different brands etc. It's a battery fault.

Quite how much this is having an effect on the batteries time will tell but it does work when it needs to if the cells are becoming unbalanced

I ordered this when I changed from Lead Acid Leisure batteries in my van to LiFePO4 - I needed to balance the 2 batteries which are wired in series to give me 24v Works like a charm - well built - comes with clear instructions

Don't expect it to do miracles straight away, however after a couple charges you'll notice the batteries becoming more balanced. Victron has great statistics for this drift in their products. It would be better if it could use more current to divert to the other battery however I guess the idea of it is to balance gradually.

Unlike other Victron products, I don't think the battery balancer can link up to the Victron app. Therefore, I don't think there's any way to see voltages or the extent of any balancing. Furthermore, I think it only cuts in above 27v, which seems too high to me. All in, it's too expensive to simply trust it might be achieving something in the background.

I have several pieces of victron equipment, and purchased these elsewhere. The units are well presented and easy to install. I purchased 3 units to balance 4*2 month old identical series connected batteries. The ‘switch on’ voltage means the batteries are left to diverge below this voltage as the units are off. The final straw came over a week after these units were first connected, when two of the units ‘buzzed’ their relays for around 5 minutes, that is fast switched them on and off! This is awful for relay service life. I generally pick Victron equipment for its solid quality; however, I’ll be looking for an alternate solution for balancing.

Can't really go wrong with victron, but not the cheapest....

I’m using these to balance my lithium batteries, and so far they’re doing their job really well. Very satisfied with the performance and reliability.
