The cover picts are colored, but, inside the book the pictures are black & white & not very clear.
The cover shows colored, very clear pictures of a few of the plants that are being used in the recipes in this book. The pictures inside the book are black and white (actually a cream-colored paper) and not nearly as clear as the cover pictures. This book is also for harvesting and it would have been wonderful if the inside pictures were colored and clear. The recipes are good and helpful. However, I note that three of the plants in these recipes, which are Saguaro cactus, Agave and Velvet Mesquites, are protected native plants by the Arizona Department of Agriculture. These restrictions may not apply to the Native American lands, but it applies to everyone else that should not touch these protected native plants. As far as I can tell, this restriction information is not in this book or it is not made clear. There are severe fines for causing harm or destroying these plants.

This book rocks
Anyone interested in the wild foods of the Desert Southwest needs this book. I had the older edition and it was good, but this is far, far better. It'll make you want to plant cactus and cholla in your yard... which I did.

A wonderful book as welcome as a soaking rain
A wonderful book as welcome as a soaking rain. Recipes that your mother wouldn't have passed on. Most importantly with education about our wonderful Sonoran Desert. Others will love this book but for us in the desert it is a must have book.

Eat Mesquite and More is a glorious feast that keeps on giving and enlivening!
This is an amazing book connecting me to place and opening my eyes and taste buds to the incredible wild edible abundance around me. The desert no longer feels scarce to me, instead I now relish and experience its diverse food forests; which I then plant, grow, and harvest around my home and neighborhood—guided by this cookbook! There are over 170 delicious wild food recipes organized by the year's seasons. So I simply open the book to the season I'm in, then it shows me what is ready for harvest, how to harvest, process, cook, and share with others (Cholla Bud Pico de Gallo Salsa most recently enjoyed). Then this book shows me how to propagate more of this abundance from seed or cuttings. Beautiful illustrations and photos further entice me, along with intriguing stories of individuals, organizations, businesses who are bringing the knowledge, use, and planting of these nutritious wild foods back into our daily lives. This book has deepened my love, understanding, and experience of this place I call home. It has enabled me to give back to, and enhance this place. And it has grown my perception of home as many of the plant families (and their recipes) featured in this book can be found (and utilized) well beyond the Sonoran Desert, throughout the West and the Americas.

Fabulous read
I love Desert Harvesters, their mission and the wealth of information they put out. This "cookbook" is so much more than just a cookbook. It's history, it's education, it's inspiration as well as instruction and encouragement to learn to grow, harvest, cook with and eat those foods that are native to your region and those that have become native adapted. While it is written around the foods and folkways of the fabulous Sonoran Desert, the principles can be applied anywhere, so if you have friends and family in other bio-regions, don't hesitate to gift them with this gem. Some of the herbs and foodstuffs do grow well beyond here and some that don't can be ordered from sources listed in the book. The book is available here as well as locally from Desert Harvesters and at Antigone Bookstore so no excuse not to pick one up...maybe two or three! Happy reading, eating and connecting!
