Words Can't Describe How Poor This Product Is
I'm a well seasoned DIYer. I've built three of my homes from scratch, with a total of 6 tile bathrooms under my belt (this one being number 7). On my last tile shower, I built the basin from scratch; framing it in, lining it, pouring the concrete basin, etc. That's a little bit of work and takes a little bit of finesse to pull it off. So when I was designing my next one, the idea of a pre-formed waterproof basin that was ready to tile seemed really appealing. In 35 years of home improvement projects, that was hands down, bar none, the worst decision I've ever made.It seems simple enough. Build a bench for the seat, place the basin in a bed of mortar, level it up and you're ready to go. But there are two big problems with this product. First, it's fragile. If you're not extremely careful when placing it, it snaps like a piece of foam packaging material. Which leads to the second, and bigger problem. Nothing sticks to the material except a hard-to-work with epoxy. And I mean nothing. Not thinset. Not construction adhesive. Not silicone caulk. Nothing. The epoxy comes in three containers. Part A, Part B, and powder. You mix the two resins together, and then add the powder. It comes with two sets of these. The instructions said to use all of the contents from the three containers; that they were pre-measured in exact quantities. The first batch I mixed was obviously not. It came out as what I'd describe was as just a shade below crumbly. A quick call to the help line, and I was told I must have mixed it wrong, and since it was an epoxy there was nothing I could use to thin it. All the while, the epoxy was drying on me, and quickly at that. So I applied it the best I could, set the tiles the best I could, and hoped for the best. The second batch was exactly the opposite, mixing to a consistency of maple syrup. Another cal to the help line, I was told again I must have mixed it wrong, and there was nothing I could added to thicken it. So I applied the syrup as best I could, tried unsuccessfully to keep the epoxy from slopping onto surfaces that needed to stay clean, and spaced/taped tile to keep it from sliding down the wall in a syrupy goo, which ended up pooling at the base of the bottom row of tiles, filling my grout line. After it dried, it dried hard. Really hard. Almost impossible to remove hard. Razor knife didn't touch it. Neither did picking tools. Neither did any of the solvents the third call to the help line suggested. I found a blog online that suggested a heat gun, which worked but not without a lot of effort and time. This isn't rocket science. There are three packets to each batch that, according to the help line, are pre-measured to make epoxy that's exactly the perfect consistency. There's no way to do it wrong. Empty the three packets in order and mix. My problem was obviously a quality control issues at the factory. So in the end, my time-saving purchase ended up costing 2-3 times more than if I'd done it from scratch the traditional way, and taking four full, long weekends to recover from.Do ~not~ buy this product. It's worth saying again. Do ~NOT~ buy this product. The design and materials it's constructed from are functionally impossible to work with, regardless of your skill level.
