too long with tons of action and little story but very fun to watch
I loved the original Mission Impossible TV series as a teen, and have grown to like how it has been transformed for the movies. Aside from the original Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movie, most of the sequels were a bit disappointing for various reasons. But this latest sequel does its best to recapture the feel of the original Mission Impossible TV show while retaining the unique characters and personalities of the modern movie. It is nice to see the little tape recording describing the mission before destroying itself and listening to the old theme song. And the frequent masks used to impersonate others is a throwback to the old TV series, too.Where Tom Cruise and company have taken this Mission Impossible movie is into the realm of almost non-stop action. The story is pretty basic and overused: the bad guys have stolen nuclear material and plan to blow up parts of the world. The good guys have to find the stolen nukes and disarm them before this can happen. It weaves bits of the previous Mission Impossible movies into the story line which will be completely lost on anyone who either hasn't seen the prior movies or forgot them. There are several twists and turns in the story, especially early on. But this movie was not made for the story. It was made for the action, and there is lots of it. The James Bond franchise has been built by putting bigger and more elaborate stunts in each movie. Tom Cruise has taken this concept and put it on steroids for Mission Impossible: Fallout. Not only are the stunts fantastic to watch, but you feel the tension, and you see Tom Cruise actually performing his own stunts, even the ones any other movie franchise would relegate to stunt doubles and/or CGI. Cruise truly deserves an Academy Award for his stunt work. The movie is far from perfect. The story is a bit difficult to follow in parts, especially if you don't remember details from the prior movies. You have to completely suspend belief in reality for some of the stunts as Cruise drives a motorcycle into a car, falls from over 2 story heights, and crashes in a helicopter with seemingly none or little injury. The length of the movie is too long, almost 2-1/2 hours, and even though the action is thrilling, by the end of the movie you're wishing it will come to an end soon.Overall, Mission Impossible: Fallout is a great sequel in the series, a lot of fun to watch, and a great popcorn movie to spend an afternoon or evening watching. Buy this blu-ray disc, though, because the extras showing Cruise preparing for and performing the stunts in the movie are equally interesting and fun to watch. Tom Cruise is getting older, and it won't be long before he will be physically unable to perform the physical stunts he has done up to now. He is an actor truly committed to the task of creating a fantastic movie experience, and we will likely never see anyone else come close to the stunt work he has performed as an actor to enhance the realism.

I like it better when Henry Cavill is a goodguy - but Tom Cruise is still Amazing!!
Our family raced to the tv after dinner for the original Mission Impossible - I am sure I can still sing the theme - and it was played, not sung .So, nice to see the youngsters doing so well with a good idea!I never miss these! Mission Impossible , in its sixth episode, still gets the surrender of disbelief so viewers can thrill to that very-last- minute save! Question: a real cliffhanger for us thrown in for good measure...Humor?No matter:Everyone did a fine job - I like it that they do not push technology too far but rely on the essential powers of the PEOPLE - inspiring ! It is that inspiration that helps in our real lives. Validates our engagement with films like this.Unselfish love, brave deeds, team devoted to win as a team. YES. Impossible goals won - yes.Giving some thought to Doing even the normal bit of good in the world is wonderful - shows like this help with the template for it.Ving Rames - his Luther, again, is super backbone and spirit God - his certainty and faith are essential, so why was Luther surprised that Ethan stopped the clock to save him in the beginning? Luther proves his worth in it well.Simon Pegg - I am a tecchie as were my parents, as part of the things we do...so his Benji was important to have around. Just when you think one of the galoots is going to win over him, he comes through. The 2-D/ 3-D tracking humor made me glad I was a scout den mother to many boys "in the day".Sean Harris and Henry Cavill - really scary pair of really tall guys. It's so cool to see what film does...like Alice in Wonderland , Mr. Harris is a small man in one production and a giant in another. Intense. He probably laughs in real life and everything! Just a guess. Not sure that Henry Cavill laughs yet, though. I got the feeling that he felt impressed by winning ANY role in an -OMG - Mission Impossible! Mr. Cavill brings a real feeling of Man of Steel to Superman, but his "why don't you just die?" in MI Fallout...yikes! When a Superman decides to "break bad" the result ....it isn't pretty! When he finally falls to his death, the entire film and it's goals is so nice and easy!Relentless, those two, in this film.As for the ladies - Perfect - Julia, Ilsa, Erika Stone, and White Widow. Somehow they seem to do just fine - not dwarfed by the superguys.Alex Baldwin has found his milieu - he often seems bigger than the others in his acting companies..but not this time...he even dies nobly! Wow! I was impressed. Finally our amazing Tom Cruise - I have followed his work since "Risky Business" in 1983 - my teen son would mimic his clowning as everyone did....such fun. A boss's daughter acted with Tom Cruise in "Cocktail" ; "Far and Away" exhilirated! , then, "A Few Good Men" and I still go back to re-watch "The Firm".I like the way the MI films are an important focus for Tom Cruise but NOT him.....he works the range of roles and not swallowed by the MI fame. Six of them now, and two more coming!God bless all these people who take storytelling to the enth. Thank you.
