Is it possible to damage the charger if the wires are installed backwards?

If I understand your question correctly then absolutely yes, it would short out and possibly worse. You would also have to forcibly modify the adapter plugs since they are formed in such a way as to prevent them from being installed backwards. You must be sure the polarity is right when you hook it up to your battery. Mine works great and charges my iPhone very fast.
