"LISTEN TO T-BONE, AND YOU'LL UNDERSTAND." B.B.KING.
"Anyone who has enjoyed the music of B.B. King, Albert or Freddie King, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Jimi Hendrix has heard T-Bone Walker as well." Pete Welding, blues scholar and blues reissue producer. This 5 CD set covers Walker's career from 1929 (2 tracks) up through the 1950's. If you already own the "T-Bone Walker The Original Source" box set from Proper Records (90 tracks) much of the music is also on this new set. But this new set (129 tracks) contains (obviously) 39 tracks not found on the Proper set. The sound overall is very good, with audible surface noise on some tracks. And you should know that the discs for this new set are CD-R discs instead of traditional industry standard discs used by most other labels. Acrobat has released several blues box sets recently and all are CD-R discs if that matters to you. The 14 page booklet has a list of the tracks in chronological order with personnel and label information. There's a six page essay on Walker and the music, plus some period b&w photos. The discs come in a thick standard size plastic jewel case. These multi-disc cases can break easily so use caution.Walker, a Texas raised guitarist (tutored by a musician who also tutored Charlie Christian), is one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th Century. He was one of the first (along with Charlie Christian) to amplify his instrument in the late 1930's/early 40's. His guitar style was a combination of blues and jazz influences. Capable of throwing out incredible solos that were both incendiary and swinging at the same time, his style and tone are easily identifiable across his entire career. Listen to "T-Bone Boogie" from 1944 and then listen to his solos in the 1950's and you'll hear what I mean. Also here are some great instrumentals ("Two Bones And A Pick", "Shufflin' The Blues", and "Blues Rock") with Walker playing alongside the great jazz guitarist Barney Kessel, from the late 50's. His vocal style (influenced by the great blues pianist/vocalist Leroy Carr) was smoother, and more subtle yet bluesy (reminiscent of early Charles Brown, who is well worth hearing on the JSP 4 CD box set of his early stuff) as opposed to the more declamatory styles heard in Chicago blues from the same period. Walker's bands were almost always small jump bands with a rhythm section and a couple of horns--but boy could they swing. Also here is Walker as strictly a vocalist (1 track) and also with orchestras of the day. This set collects just about all the music Walker recorded up through the 1950's. All his hits are here like "Call It Stormy Monday", "Bobby Sox Blues", "West End Blues', and others. Across these sides you can hear how Walker's style progressed using all the refinements he picked up over time. Included are tracks from Black & Blue, Capitol, Imperial, Mercury, Atlantic, and the Columbia labels. After the 1950's Walker recorded relatively little so this set contains the music from his important years. But he later recorded some fine sides for the Brunswick, Bluesway, Polydor (for which he won a Grammy), and Reprise labels before his death in 1974.If you own just a "Best Of" of Walker's music--you need this. And if you're familiar with a bit more of his music--you still need this set. And if you're new to Walker and you're a blues fan your blues music library has a huge hole in it without Walker. This is one of the best blues collections of 2014. Get it.And if you want to learn more about Walker and his music, the book "The T-Bone Walker Story, Stormy Monday", by Helen Oakley Dance is well worth reading.

SOME WELL DONE, RARE T-BONE - NOTHING MEDIUM ABOUT THIS SET
I'm reviewing this box set, not demonstrating how much I know about T-Bone Walker or how much info I can dig up online. That's your job.Give the musical snippets Amazon gives us a listen. If you like one T-Bone song, you'll like all T-Bone songs. If you buy this set, you'd better like T-Bone because this is a lot of T-Bone. I am no audiophile and I avoid being around audiophiles, but the sound quality seems pretty good to me. Good liner notes. A nice looking package, well done. It's a good listen for blues fans.If you don't want to go whole hog (buying this set), I'd recommend this smaller set which is some of the best T-Bone there is. The smaller set has satisfied me for about 20 years. The Complete Imperial Recordings, 1950-1954 As you can probably guess, all of the songs on the smaller set are also contained in the big set. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Very "complete" collection.
For the serious blues guitar collector this is essential material. It is easy, from listening to this collection, to hear the influence Walker had on Chuck Berry and BB King. Even a little bit of vocal influence on Nat King Cole. It contains, on Disc 5 the complete "T-Bone Blues" (Atlantic Records). Someday, someone will perfect the method of putting 5 cds in one package. This one broke as soon as I opened it. That, however, should in no way deter you from buying it.
