Can this be used for cars?

That is a good question. We have not tested that. It is meant to count people. You can try it and if it is not possible you can always return the product.

Will it count children and adults?

It is recommended that you put the counter about 3 1/2 or 4 feet off the floor (I can't remember exactly), so obviously, if you follow that guideline, it will miss small children. But it will count anyone who is tall enough to break the beam across the doorway at whatever height you put it.

Does this have a slot for microSD or any way to communicate to an external device?

No, you can only read of the display, it can`t cummunicate to an external device.
