The tale of Ochise (Mitsuko Aoi) is about the daughter of a rich merchant whose insatiable appetite for filth and perversion draws her deeper into violence, darkness and betrayal. Finally, the story of Omitsu (Miki Obana) follows a sadistic lord (Asao Koike) whose eye is caught one day by a beautiful member of his harem who shares his strange taste for pain and blood, but who holds a secret of her own that will destroy his entire household.A stylistic about-face from the director s prior work for Toei on the successful Abashiri Prison action series starring Ken Takakura, Ishii s erotic films grew increasingly shocking, violent and strange, and Orgies of Edo finds him combining period film detail with carnivalesque grotesquerie to create his own particular vision of love and sex. Enter a world full of depravity and perversion...
’Orgies of Edo’ (1969) is directed by Teruo Ishii, who, despite his quite versatile work, often is referred to as the Japanese ”king of pinky violence”. Just like the more known (and kind of infamous) ”Shogun’s Sadism’ (1976) ’Orgies of Edo’ is a follow-up to Ishii’s own trendsetter ”Shogun’s Joy of Torture’ (1968). We also get that same kind of anthology-dive into the decadence of the Edo period. But ’Orgies of Edo’ is definitely more than a cheesy high concept quickie. The quality in the aesthetics and the script is superb and packs a slowly increasing feeling of a world full of depravity and perversion. This is actually as well crafted as sexploitation (and torture porn) gets, and Ishii seems to have directed it without any kind of big pretensions. Well, beside creating something really surreal and messed up, but still contain the feeling of an A-class production.Besides Teruo Ishii’s ’Horrors of Malformed Men’ (1969) ’Orgies of Edo’ probably is my favorite Arrow-release of 2018. Great stuff indeed...
