Best. Book. Ever.
This book does away with glossy paper and colour illustrations, and deals solely with the information that you need to be able to draw a human head. The information is straight-forward and focusses only on what you need to know. The technique itself is one that I prefer to use and is great for people who are more practically and academically-minded as I am or who weren't necessarily "born to draw" or who are picking art up later on in life.I ordered this along with "The Art of Drawing & Painting Portraits: Create realistic heads, faces & features in pencil, pastel, watercolor, oil & acrylic" and the two books compliment each other perfectly.

Perfect for portraiture
When in college, I received excerpts from this book for my portraiture class and picked this book up a couple of years later to get back into the swing of drawing again. It is a fantastic book. Burne Hogarth is a master of the human form and it really shows in every one of his drawings. Please take into account that I would not reccommend this book for a beginner. Hogarth's descriptions can be wordy and very complicated; if you are a beginner and would like to try your hand at portraiture I would not pick up this book to start. However, I found it very useful when preparing my portfolio to apply for my Animation diploma as it allows drawing of the head from all angles, adding a 3D structure in which to form the head and face around.Hogarth continuously states in his book that it will not make you a master but give you a basic understanding of the fundamentals of how the face works and it really works. The simple structures he uses can be difficult to get used to but I honestly can't see myself drawing the human head any other way now. His format is much easier and much more solid to follow.
