I've done everything I can think of to try to close the knife but it won't budge. Not sure if it's defective or what. No directions.

Look inside the area at the end of the butt of the blade - the area where the blade is supposed to close into. You will see right in the middle against the back or butt of the blade a metal section that you need to press to the left. Once you press that section inward you will be able to close the blade into the handle. The knife is designed so that metal rib or piece keeps the blade from folding in on you accidentally. Don't worry, it took me some time to figure that out as well. Hope this helps.

Has anyone traveled in a airplane w this knive without the blade? so it would be tsa compliant, in a carry-on bag.

I have forgotten I had is several times and gotten all the way home and realized it was in my carry with the blade still in.

What is the community experience with taking this thru TSA screening, minus the blade?

Without the blade this is technically not a cutting instrument. However, if found on your person, you will likely delay your passage through TSA airport security screening. There would be strong suspicion that a blade was somewhere hidden on carryon. Recommend don't do it.
