Dark Side of the Moon (Laura Cardinal Series Book 2) eBook : Black, J. Carson: desertcart.co.uk: Kindle Store Review: Fantastic read. Entertaining and gripping. - I would recommend this book to anyone who likes crime, cop drama or a good mystery. Great read that help my attention from start to finish. Love the main character and the plot with its many twists. Very entertaining. Review: A potentially great mystery - This started out as brilliantly as the Laura Cardinal series book I read before, and I enjoyed it tremendously until the point where the CIA et al came into the picture. For me, the changing viewpoints dissipated the tension and the plot got so complex, with so many law enforcement bodies involved that I had trouble following it. Once Laura got back the story, it was fine. I also guessed the whodunnit early on, very much by a process of elimination and at the end did not feel enough clues were planted for that guess to be legitimate. But this won't stop me reading J Carson Black again. I love her style and the way she gets into the character's emotional life grabs me completely. Also love that ghost!

More of Laura Cardinal for those who have already read Cry Wolf, an excellent thriller in the Deadly Dozen boxed set!! Laura and her partner are faced with a brutal murder of a newly married couple that somehow feels personal with the rage exhibited! Searching for a killer, sifting through possible suspects, Laura becomes more human and real as we glimpse the myriad of emotions she goes through and the thoughts and feelings she shares while on the hunt!!

This is another great book and is the second in the Laura Cardinal series. I have read the entire series now & I couldn't honestly pick out which book was my favorite because they are all so well done. If you read these books out of order don't worry one does not build on the next and could be read as a stand alone book too. There may be a couple of minor swear words and no sex in this book so for those of you who don't like that no need to worry. The murders themselves aren't what I would call gruesome or at least described to the nth degree. They are described pretty much like a real detective would describe them. The story is great and told extremely well and I just love the main character Laura. She is complex and very interesting. The rest of the characters are interesting as well. I cannot wait to read the next in the series (hint hint) and I look forward to reading the other books by this author that are not in the series.

Dark Side of the Moon (Laura Cardinal Series, Book Two) Here we find our female detective, Laura Cardinal, struggling with a new partner, new case and new romance. In this book, Laura is less self-confident and spirals into depression. Lots of twists and turns here and characters to meet. Perhaps one too many, as I did have to go back and reread earlier sections when some peripheral characters were reintroduced in the last half of the book. Not a big complaint though, as I appreciate the complexity and detail of this author's storytelling. Again, Ms. Black does an excellent job in crafting her mystery and delivering a surprise ending. I Read Book 2 immediately after Book 1 (Darkness on the Edge of Town) and couldn't put it down. Well done.

I loved the first book in the series, but was disappointed in this one. I was much less interested in the story itself (a case of ecoterrorism) and the characters were not appealing. There are several different storylines going on at once, which makes it confusing and overly complicated. In the "main" storyline, a group steals some nuclear waste and threatens to release it. Then there is the story line with the two dead campers, the sick child, and Laura's live-in boyfriend who may or may not be cheating/breaking up with her. At some point, the storylines intersect/overlap. The biggest problem in this series is characterization. Characters (including Laura) tell you what they think, feel, like, etc. rather than allowing you to discover those facts for yourself. Most characters are presented in very two-dimensional terms. I didn't care about the sick child because we met her like twice in the story, and she made no impact in those scenes. The same with the whole subplot about her boyfriend -- we didn't meet him until the very end, so I didn't know if he still loved her or not, and after hearing her whine about not being able to reach him through half a dozen chapters, I didn't even care anymore. I think this could have worked with flashbacks to other times when they did things together, or alternating with chapters from his point of view, or something. It is difficult to care what happens in the story, when none of the characters are emotionally appealing. The author has some really good plot ideas, so I hope she can work on the characters a little more and then these would be five star novels.
