Delightful play
Everyone who acts wants to play Sylvia. A fun little play with a good but unpredictable ending.

Sylvia left me flat
I just did not think the theme of the play was very funny ... a man letting his marriage slip away because of his affection for his dog. Not my idea of funny.

Perhaps it's His Best
I can only say that this might be Gurney's best play. There are too many others of his, Love Letters, comes to mind, that would also be qualified to fit the 'best' spot. All I can really say is that this is one of the best plays of all times. It's light, it's profound, it has points that fit all of us.The story - A couple of empty nesters move into the city. Then one day he shows up with a dog - Sylvia. His wife doesn't want a dog in the city. It's a battle of the species. We put this on at our local theater to rave comments by our audience.

Great play
I have always loved A.R. Gurney's "Sylvia". I bought this play to study up on since I would be auditioning for Sylvia and of course it was very helpful to have. There are great scenes in this play, just about any between Sylvia and Gregg or Sylvia and Kate. There aren't really any good monologue pieces, especially for Sylvia (since she's rarely alone). You might be able to piece together a monologue for either Kate or Greg by cutting some lines.

Sweet and Funny - just like the protagonist!
Sweet and funny - just like the protagonist. A.R. Gurney writes a simple tale, but it is also very profound. Sylvia brings out so many feelings about the people and pets in our and in our loved ones' lives!

Something different for a book club meeting.
Loved the play when we saw it at the Denver Center Theater. A friend suggest that she and I do a few scenes for our book club. They liked our amateur performance.Good discussion followed.

The "discussions" between husband and wife provide excellent practice in body language
Using this in an acting class. The student are enjoying it, and their dog imitations keep the class laughing. The "discussions" between husband and wife provide excellent practice in body language. Altogether a successful choice for college students.

Very Clever show
A very good play, I am going to submit it to a theatre to direct. After reading it I don't think it will be as easy to do as it looked when I saw the show a few years ago.

Amusing play - a tad long in places

Surreal, funny and touching
Probably a little surreal for some, but like the idea. A play for a free flowing producer with an imagination.
