Ann's YA characters are so relatable. Honestly I wish I could time travel back to when I was 17 and give myself the gift of Ann's books and just tell my 17-year-old self :it's okay, you're going to be okay. In this book I loved both Leah and Cyrus. I thought they were very well drawn characters. I think Leah is very different from Sadie because Sadie is an overachiever, she excels in academia whilst Leah is quite lost in life and I think it's okay if you're one or the other when you're 17. It's absolutely fine to know what you want to do in life later on to be driven like Sadie, but it's also absolutely fine if you're still trying to figure things out like Leah. As always it's not just about the romance in this book. It's also about Leah trying to find her place and identity hlwhilst she is on this epic journey through China. As readers we are invited to join her in this journey and we are rewarded with a story that's emotional, heartfelt and ultimately comforting and hopeful. The romance blossoms in front of our eyes and we have a lot of interactions between Cyrus and Leah and that allow us to see the dynamics in full. I thought Oliver was such a fun and memorable side character. Review: Lovley characters - Leah makes a terrible mistake at her cousin’s wedding. She must improve her second language skills. So, she is sent on a trip that will do just that and also teach her more about Chinese culture. And there she finds herself facing an old enemy. However, relationships and attitudes change …. This a gentle romance. I could see what was coming and it all took rather longer than it needed to happen. Nevertheless, a satisfying read and very well drawn characters.

TL;DR is I loved it!
The thing about Ann Liang books is that I simultaneously want to get to the end of the story but also never want the book to finish. Ann's YA characters are so relatable. Honestly I wish I could time travel back to when I was 17 and give myself the gift of Ann's books and just tell my 17-year-old self :it's okay, you're going to be okay. I dont really read at all but i liked this, very sweet, light and i cried a lot. Its a story about healing but still so many times i laughed out loud which was a nice mix💕

The best of the YA genre
Ann Liang can do no wrong and proves again that she is one of the best YA authors out there. Never thought I'd end up there is easily in my top 3 favourite Ann Liang books, and Cyrus might be my favourite male character she has ever written.

3.5🌟 Such a cute read! I loved seeing Leah’s journey to self love and finding true friends for the first time. Also I loved Cyrus, he’s a sweetheart deep down.

You can rely on Ann Liang!
Synopsis: After Leah accidentally curses her cousin instead of congratulating her at her wedding, her parents decide to send her on a three-week language trip through China to improve her Chinese. Worst of all, Cyrus, her childhood nemesis, is also there—and ends up being her teammate. But as the two struggle through the tasks and earn points, Leah not only rediscovers her Chinese roots—but also her connection to Cyrus in a whole new way. Conclusion: "Never Thought I'd End Up Here" was my third book by Ann Liang and certainly won't be my last. I once again had a great time reading it. My personal highlight was the friendships Leah made within the group, especially with her roommate Daisy. Central themes in the book are modeling, beauty pressure, and cultural alienation. Recommendation: For fans of unique young adult books!

“Do you two know each other?” “No,” I rush to say. “Not at all.” “We know each other very well,” Cyrus answers just as quickly. “If by very well you mean that I have dreamed of murdering you,” I mutter. Cyrus’s gaze flits to my face. Lingers an extra beat. “So you’ve dreamed of me?” this was such a fun switch up tonally from i am not jessica chen, which is prob my fav ann liang book so far - although this is a close second. leah is burnt out and lost (mood) after a modeling career that she didn't have the heart to stick out. she ends up on a trip to china w her former childhood friend ish nemesis who ruined her life... the perfect opportunity for payback. but she finds that things weren't always what they seemed and people can change. and sometimes, you don't need to be anything other than yourself. super cute and sweet coming of age story with some romance and identity crises. oh i do not miss being a teenager lol. liang gives us such great lowkey simp mmc's, cyrus was downright charming when he wanted to be. i am begginggggg for an adult romance from liang one day ❤️🔥 i would so love to see a spinoff between two of the friends who i could perhaps see a future between 👀 we'll have to wait and see! “I’ll keep being your enemy, if that’s what you’d prefer.” His eyes drop down too, drifting to my lips with such weight and intent that I can almost feel the ghost brush of his gaze. “I can be whatever you want me to be.” "On a bad day, books offer a language for your pain, and on a good day, books remind you just how precious your life is." "I suppose what I’m trying to say is that everything you touch turns beautiful. The world becomes beautiful, as long as there’s you."
